I found a couple while Googling around but also found some old free ones that had closed down which is why I was hesitant to join any as I fear that they might close down soon as well.

I'd prefer a free one if possible but some cheap paid ones that are reliable would work too, perhaps one of you could recommend one that you've used for sometime now.

Thanks

There were a bunch of directories around a few years ago
that are dean-ends now. YahooPodcasts being one of the
    more surprising ones.

I have Podcasts at podomatic.com - it hosts the files
and then the podcast channel itself can be submitted as
a resource to directories as you find them.

You submit the podomatic channel to Itunes and
    other directories.

There is something called Podcastalley which seems like
it is operational but their registration system is broken -
I haven't been able to verify my account to submit to it.
Such problems are common because Podcasting was
gonna be the big thing until Video took over.

I'm pretty half-assed with it and my stuff gets more attention
    than I was expecting.

My friend just put up a site where he does Podcasts. (He's linked on my Angela page) I will ask him what he uses.

What about hosting them on your blog or your own domain? Couldn't you put up a podcast directory right on your own site? Maybe I'm ignorant about that, but that's kind of what I'm planning to do. Any reason not to?

There is no reason to use a special host.

In fact searching for things like "podcast host" or "video hosting" etc usually never leads you anywhere but to specialized and overpriced hosting companies with under qualified resources.

If you want a great host for cheap for static files go with:

Web Hosting by PowWeb - One Plan, One Price - load balanced, colocated, and unlimited.

    or

Web Hosting: Dedicated & Shared Website Hosting Solutions - Aplus.net - Tested them as a media file host for more than two years. Great economy host.

Thinking you need special hosting for media files is a fallacy that the hosting industry uses to prey on those that do not know any better to charge them more than they should be paying.

You could also use Amazon s3 if you need scalability but Amazon s3 is actually a more expensive hosting solution than people understand and the other two options above are much cheaper for the volume.

We also offer a variety of premium podcasting services at Nanacast

I agree with your point about any host working, however a lot of them prohibit strict MP3 hotlinking and if enough users listened to these podcasts my account could get suspended for "resource abuse" as once again, they use the "this is a web host, not file host" argument.

I'll look into the other options mentioned though, thanks to all who replied.
