I Get It Now... [Leave the forum cleaner than you found it]

I get why some folks feel the need to post their questions on the main forum instead of the proper section.

I just had a question on social media, so I clicked over to that section. Instead of finding my answer, I spent my time reporting spam posts until I forgot my original question.

If you have ten minutes to spare, click on over to one of the special sections and report the spammers. With the 60 second delay, you can probably flag 7-8 spammers and help clean out the joint.

Maybe if people see the special topic sections cleaned up, they won't be afraid to post there.

It won't cure the problem of posting in the wrong section, but it might help some...

  • Regarding that 60 second delay, as I do see the potential for abuse if it was not in place, I am wondering if it could not do more good than harm if it was set at 30 seconds? 20? 10?
John you would have really cleaned up then!

Arnold, I have no problem with the 60 second delay. It serves a purpose.

And it isn't about me cleaning up. It's about everybody that gives a crap doing a little bit on a consistent basis. If everybody who went to the beach brought out their own cans and wrappers plus a few extras, things would be a lot nicer.

The same theory applies here. If you have a few minutes to spare, why not pop into one of the less heavily used sections and report a few spammers?

I understand, and I trust that it serves its purpose indeed.

This is true, and I do try to do my part here in between posting. But what if one was walking on the beach, and there was a time delay for the amount of trash you are allowed to pick up within 60 seconds? (just a hypothetical question that makes no sense, don't answer it).

The same theory applies here. If you have a few minutes to spare, why not pop into one of the less heavily used sections and report a few spammers?
Ironically it was only a few days ago where 1 guy posted 3 spam posts in the same thread. I reported one, and went for the other but received the delay warning. I did wait and reported that one, but then I thought to myself, should I wait another 60 seconds, or assume that someone else will report the third one? I then shamefully went on to do something else...

It would however be cool if a module was programmed into the site to let mods approve some of the spam cops for little or no delay....

For example, when John McCabe reports a spammer, we could set him to "no delay", because he is a trusted member of the community.

On the other hand, John Schmuck would remain on a 60-second report cycle, because we don't know him at all.

When the mods see someone who is awesome and trustworthy, they could click a radio button to reset the timer on those folks.

        Just thinking out-loud...

Bill, actually John Schmuck is quite a stand up guy: John Schmuck profiles | LinkedIn

I probably spend the majority of my time reporting threads/posts, some of my replies even seem harsh and may rub some people the wrong way but that's only because i don't suffer fools lightly.

Some of the questions people ask are just plain stupid (contrary to what your 1st grade teacher told you, there are stupid questions).

IMO some people will post in the Main Forum regardless because they know it gets the most views. There are of course newbies who don't know their way around and that's understandable.

Sometimes it does seem like there are only a handful of members who take the time to report spam/erroneous threads etc. But that's life, some will take the time to do what they think is best for the Forum while others wont...

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Update: Just looked at Social Media again. The spam is gone, for now.

You guys - and anyone else that helped clean up - ROCK!

In golf we repair our divots and then take a moment to repair any additional divots that the jackwad(s) ahead of our group didn't bother with. I guess it's all a matter of how you were brought up, e.g. to give a crap or to let someone else give a crap.

I haven't posted much here in quite a while, but I still visit often and when I see a spammy post I make it a point to hit the report button.

John, I'd like to congratulate you on a job well done, I just came from that forum and not a lick of spam in sight.

All kidding aside, I do my part when I see spam, thing is that I only usually visit the main, off-topic and (CPA, CPM, CPL) forums.

Joseph, a lot of us are like that. That's why some of the other sections have more junk posts than the main forum. Just about everybody hits the main forum and maybe a section on what they do.

If everyone who uses the forum would take the time to report the junk, it would disappear quickly. Like litter, it won't stay gone, but cleaning up a bit whenever we have time helps.
