Host part of website on Amazon S3?

My sales page loads really slowly (7-10 sec) since I have a lot of images on it.
My thinking was, if I hosted all the images on my Amazon S3 account, would the load time be faster?

The only trouble is however...say that the images are 2mb total. That's the cost factor right there.

What do you think? Will it help my load time?

Taking the images off your server will definitely help. I would also look at making the image smaller though. 2MB is a lot for a salespage.

Yes it may load faster, especially if you use their CloudFront CDN facility too.

As Will said though, 2mb is rather excessive for a sales page. jpeg-optimizer.com is your friend....

I have tried Cloudfront now but my site is actually loading slower now than before.
I've managed to pull the size of the page down to 1.2mb, but it takes at least 10 seconds to load it no matter where I connect from.

Before switching to Amazon S3/Cloudfront (and before installing W3 Total Cache) I got load times of 5-6 seconds. Not good at all, but still better than with Amazon.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Is it still slow? I've got a feeling Cloudfront uses some cacheing and it might take a little while to get into its stride.

How about the speed when just using S3? (without Cloudfront)

I am hosting some of my images and videos (almost all) to Amazon S3, so far so good. Try it.

How about a link to your site? Maybe some more details? Just throwing things on S3 is more like putting lipstick on a pig if the site itself or the host is the problem....

I don't see how it could hurt. I have heard several companies use Amazon's resources for their online activities. One of them being Netflix. May want to check to see if Amazon has changed thier price structure. I got a bill from them for a very small amount of traffic so I could imagine depending on the size and traffic of a big site how much it would have cost.

S3 is slower than Cloudfront because S3 is for file storage, and Cloudfront is for CDN...You will want to use Cloudfront. Pick region that is close to your target customer. If you are in the US then pick US region.
