I'm new onto Twitter and was hoping that, when I post, I'd get my full URL shown (e.g. to a blog post) so as to gain a valuable backlink. But even though I have enough characters available for it, Twitter keeps shortening it down so I lose the backlink (although readers can still click and follow it, obviously).

I've noticed however that some people seem able to get the full URL to appear on their Tweets, i.e. with their own domain name etc., but I have no idea how!

Can somebody help me out with this, please?

Andrew

All external links on Twitter are nofollow, so (at least as far as Google is concerned) you won't get a backlink from Twitter no matter what you do.

Thanks, I'll stop worrying about missing out on the SEO benefit.

Still intrigued as to how people manage to get their full URL in there though!!!

And yes, absolutely agree about providing valuable content - as with any communication to your list.

      Thanks,

Yeah, if you get a good amount of targeted followers and actually participate in the conversations that go on there, retweet things you find interesting and post links to interesting sites from time to time (rather than just spamming links to whatever it is you're promoting), you can get some decent traffic from Twitter. You won't get credit for a backlink in Google, even if you spam your URL a million times in 5 minutes (all that'll get you is unfollowed and possibly banned from Twitter.. lol) but if you use it right it can still be a great source of traffic.

I was under the impression that Twitter didn't automatically TinyURL your links anymore, I know I've been able to get full URLs in my tweets just by typing the full URL instead of "shrinking" it with TinyURL, Bit.Ly, etc.

If you have one of the free twitter blogging features set up, you can get backlinks from that blog. IE Twitwall

I have seen and verified backlinks.

Many thanks, Jill, I have now posted on twitwall and can see the full URL. I'll take a look in a day or two to confirm that it is indeed shown as an inbound link from my end too.

How long are your URLs? Is there perhaps a cutoff point for length?

My blog posts about which I have been twittering are long because they include long-tail keywords in the post name by default (just checked and the one I tweeted earlier was 108 characters). Perhaps if they were shorter (like yours?) they wouldn't get converted?

I'll try another one later, about a different blog, which isn't so optimised (so 42 chars total) and see how that goes.

Interested to know how long the longest URL is that anybody has managed to get posted without it converting though.

        Ah, RTFM!!!

        From Twitter Support

Does Twitter allow html in web updates?

No. We escape all html for security purposes. However, if you paste in a link that is less than 30 characters, we'll post it in its entirety. If it's longer than 30 characters, we'll convert it to a shorter URL.

Not sure what happens if it's exactly 30 characters though

Make sure your URL shortening service uses 301 redirects (not 302). Why? For backlink purposes. Nothing wrong with a short URL if it passes link credit on to your site.

Also, I have used Twitter to do this and gained traffic, users, and sales. So Twitter IS good for something.

And my advice is to ignore nofollow. A link is a link...trust me, the nofollow debate is not as important as it seems.

Check that with the NoDoFollow extension for Firefox (or simply view the source of any page on Twitter that has external links). All external links on Twitter are rel="nofollow" so Google doesn't count them.

Since the whole purpose of "nofollow" is to tell the search engines not to follow a link (and therefore, not to count it as a backlink).. I think I'd rather not ignore nofollow, if I'm going to leave a link on a site I like to make sure Google is giving me credit for the backlink. I do make an exception for Twitter just because it can be used to drive traffic whether or not the search engines follow your links, but I know I've left links on Twitter and (regardless of the site's high pagerank and constant updates which should get it crawled by Google several times a day) I've never seen a "link" from Twitter to any of my sites in my Google Webmaster Tools.
