choosing sub category in kindle

can someone give me a simple explanation on how to find the best one?

for example do i look up the best seller in that category ( childrens books > games) and just model it?

or do i do the opposite and find a subcategory that isnt competitive

and if so, how do i do either of the above

and can someone explain how to do this in laymans terms without technical jargon or posting a video that i have to watch or a product i have to buy

ie

step 1, 2, 3

thanks

You're allowed to choose two. One way to do it is to choose one fairly competitive category and then pick a fairly non-competitive second category.

Do the marketing and get the book ranked in the second category. This should get you on a best seller list, which will give you more exposure. If you're in the KDP Select program, a good giveaway event can give your rankings a boost, help you get on various "people who bought X also bought..." lists (and their looked at, etc. cousins).

You also aren't locked permanently into a category. If you find your original choices aren't getting traction, change them.

step 1 find two categories - one compettive , one non competitive - how do i do this?

step 2 'do the marketing' to get the book ranked in the 2nd category - what do you mean by this, exactly?

step 3 do a giveaway event - how? what is this? i dont have physical copies to give away

Yes, I'd look at the competition's books in that category and see what their Amazon Paid Rank is for them to get ranked in that position. If it's more than 100,000, then I believe you could rank within the top 100 of that category with some good promotion/marketing techniques for your book.
can you expand on the steps to do that?

      1. go to competition
      2. how do i find paid rank?
      3. if more than 100000 = 130000

In addition to what John McCabe has said,
you need to also look out for traffic and exposures
outside Amazon as this will quickly give you a good
standing order to be ranked high.

Giving out free copies and hoping to get reviews is one good way to look.
Another methods you can't ignore is promoting your book using trailer videos,
blogging, highly related book forums and more..
