This basic question -- whether to create a blog or website or both for a science fiction short story, and coming book -- needs clarification.

Part of the blog/site's progresson will be to invite criticism, and sci-fi/fantasy shorts. And, of course, the blog/site will be used to promote book sales.

The intensity and variety of wisdom/experiences on Warriors are profound, and I must thank an internet friend for suggesting it.

I'm just learning to navigate the site, and hope I've posted in the correct forum.

A blog will give you the option of better interaction with your audience / readers, which sounds like it may be the better option for your specific needs.

A blog is a website, Arthurren.

For many purposes, there's no significant distinction between "websites that are blogs" and "websites that aren't blogs" any more, these days. "Blogging software" can be used to make any kind of website, static or dynamic, interactive or passive - anything at all. Similarly, a regularly updated website can be made without using "blogging software".

So, the question is: what exactly do you mean by a "blog"?

I've given "newbie" a whole new definition! I'm adding the blog/site non-distinction to my list of archania. And thank YOU! Excellent sources.

Welcome, and you have posted in the correct forum...

You can always do a main website landing page, with a blog on another page, so I guess my suggestion would be both...

This isn't really an either or question, as Alexa is hinting.

Use a CMS (Content Management System) such as Wordpress or Weebly to set up a simple website (there are lots of online tutorials showing you how to do so)

Then make one of the pages your blog where you update in intervals.....

    And boom.

    That's it.

As Lexy and others have stated, you would do well to understand that the lines between a blog and a website are pretty fuzzy, especially in terms of what each can accomplish.

I would suggest that rather than asking others which platform would be best for you, it might be helpful to list what you want to accomplish with your business and how you might best present your offerings to your audience.

The possibilities for creating a multi-functional web site that includes a blog are almost mind-blowing these days. There are so many options that you can choose from it becomes a matter of figuring out what you want to do and then shopping for the best alternative given your budget.

I would take some time and browse through other web sites in your niche or parallel niches and notice what you like and don't like about each. That will help you to understand the possibilities available for the structure of your site and it will also allow you to form some personal preferences for how you would like to execute your business prior to going down the money path where you buy a theme, plug-ins, add-ons, etc.

The very best to you on your new project,

      Steve

I blogged for months without any return on investment, then started creating products and profited immediately all while building my list!

That's not to say people don't make money from blogs. It just wasn't working out very well for me until I started creating products of my own. I still blog too, just not as often anymore.
