I need to start a blog what do I do?

Hello, I am new to internet marketing and I just opened a store last week in the survival niche. I want to start writing articles and build an audience but don't know where to start. I have a facebook business page I was thinking to use but also want a blog site. I read somewhere that certain blog sites will actually hurt your ranking? can you guys suggest a cheap and easy way to get started writing articles and building my list?

Thank you
Adam

Join Survivalist forums. There are tons of them, some of which are insanely active. People are nuts about that type of stuff.

If your content is good enough, and you stay active in the forum, you'll develop friendships with other forum members after which you can mention your business.

    Go where your customers are.

If you feel like you can't go into one of those forums because you don't have enough content, the content isn't good enough, or you are afraid to add to the discussion, then you might be getting ahead of yourself.

    But go where they are.

    Then solve their problems.

Why don't you start a regular magazine news blog and use curated content its a topic thats bound to get more popular.

You can easily get hosting anywhere and use the push button installation available. There's a neat cheap video floating around on how to backup your wordpress blog. People will tell you don't install wp that way but if you backup its fine to do that.

      Steps
Search for hosting (most people use hostgator)
Search for a magazine wordpress theme (news is good if you want to curate)
Search for good content and post it with a note where it came from (Source: Yahoo.com)

Promote = search here for how to promote

OR GO THE EASY ROUTE AND TAKE OUT A BLOGGER BLOG. Its googles free blogging system, and they also have google sites.

You need to find more forums and blogs on your niche and inspire on them. Try to develop traffic strategies such as SEO. Build content and from there you can start monetizing it after a bit of traffic.

Thanks for all the advice, I had one question. I just went and purchased a new domain for the blog but haven't purchased the hosting yet. A thought just came to mind and I wanted to see if it was a good idea or not. What If I just created a new page called BLOG on my online store website and wrote my blog there so it would be mysitedotcom/blog vs mysiteblogdotcom would this have any benefit in ranking my store or would it not make a differece? I hope that makes sense. haha

      Hey Adam,

Here's a post you might want to read that should help you make that decision:

Which is best for Blog SEO: Separate Domain, SubDomain or SubFolder?

I've always been taught that that best way is to have your blog as a subfolder for SEO purposes because even if you have a static site such as an ecommerce store, having the blog attached as a subfolder means that you're always adding new content which is an important component to increasing authority in the eyes of the search engines.

You could then also use the domain which you already purchased and use it as a separate satellite blog with slightly different content, sort of like and outpost to link to your site as well. Best of both worlds.

        Hey Adam,

I would suggest getting the viral blogging platform. It's 'viral' because it's designed to automatically rank well with the search engines. You don't need to worry about setting up web hosting, design, themes, or plugins, because it comes ready made for you to just login in and start blogging (although you do have the ability to customize it to your liking if you wanted to).

It also comes with high converting lead capture pages and some 'fast start' training. Because it ranks well with the search engines, you're already positioned to get more traffic to your site. And more traffic to your site means better list building.

It's a great "all-in-one" platform for any business that is looking to get started on creating and building their online presence. I've been using it for my own business since April 2013 and have ranked a few times on the first page of Google, which I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. There's also an opportunity to make some residual income on the backend if you wanted to (otherwise, you could just use the platform for your biz).

Let me know if you want me to send you the link.

Putting your blog on a sub folder of your main site is actually good for your search engine ranking, as it allows you to add new content to an otherwise static site on a regular basis. You can easily install a Wordpress blog on the subfolder and update daily or weekly. This fresh infusion of content will not only be good for SEO but also help keep your current site visitors informed of site updates and sales.

Good quality content on your ecommerce site is going to help your rankings and its also going to engage your visitors and build trust so that they buy from your store.

So I would say you are on the right track.

If it were me, I would incorporate articles within the store itself - not sure if this is easy as I don't know what platform you are using for the store itself. The articles would be designed to be search engine bait as well as informative for your visitors.

Then I would also add a blog that provided news-type content for your store itself. Something where your customers could visit to see what upcoming sales you have, new products you plan to add, expansion plans and so forth. Using yourdomaindotcom/blog should be fine for this.

You are missing some details on this.

If you start your own site, you'll have full control over what is on the site.

Only way there someone could try to hurt your ranking would be with a negative SEO strategy - but this is extremely rare and not something you should worry about (until after you have some massively successful site up ).

Use the search feature on this forum and you'll find suggestions on different hosting platforms to use.

Use the search feature on this forum and you are sure to come across step by step how to get the blog installed and running.

Use the search feature on this forum and you'll find best themes (should you go wordpress) to use on your site.

Use the search feature on this forum and you'll find all the plugins you'll want to consider adding to your site.

Use the search feature on this forum and you'll even find a ton of PLR content you can use to get your site filled in quickly.

If all this is too much work and you have some money, use the search feature on this forum and I'm confident you can find someone to put it all together for you for a fair price.

Did I mention there is a search feature on this forum?

    Hey Adam,

To get a cheap and professional looking blog I would suggest to use Wordpress. However, don't use wordpress hosting if you want to monetize your blog as they don't allow it. Get your own hosting from Hostgator, is very cheap and they are very good with great support. Upload wordpress onto it for free and your away!

There are many tutorials on youtube you can find about the set up process of each step if you get stuck, just do a search on youtube and you will find the info you are looking for. However, wordpress is very easy to use so after a short while you will get use to it.

However, the free themes on wordpress (although quite good) are a bit generic so you may want to think about purchasing a better theme once you are up and running to make your blog stand out a bit more and look different and more professional than all the rest. I use elegantthemes.com but there are many others that also provide good themes. Elegant themes are pretty cheap and have really high quality themes.

When it comes to frequency of posts, you want to be posting regularly, 3-4 posts a week is pretty good going. A good guideline for your posts lengths is about 400-700 words. Make good quality and unique content a top priority. Google will also like regular and unique content too.

Re keywords, to get started, pick a keyword for each post with relatively high monthly searches and low competition. Put your keyword in your title and any other sub-titles in your post. Also try if you can to get it in the first and last sentence of your post and think about trying to get it to appear about once every 100 words. These are not hard and fast rules, but if you can do these things then it will help your seo. More importantly, make it reader friendly, so don't get hung up on the seo stuff too much but do it if you can.

Build a following on twitter and also on facebook and post your posts on there each time you do one. You can also put your posts on stumbleUpon and Dig.com

    Hope this helps.

I have no idea why people still suggest that in 2013. It's terrible. It's not even the same "Hostgator" anymore, not since summer 2012, and is nothing more than an EIG brand now. There are better hosts.

Those domain names will be fine and one won't rank any better over the other.
Hosting: HostGator - Baby Plan should get you up and running.
I tend to buy domains from GoDaddy and it all works well for me.
To build your site use a builder such as XSitePro or Wordpress which is available as a one click install with many hosts.
