Puzzling inbound links

by 6 comments
I was just perusing the AWStats for one of my sites and found that in the section 'Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines)' there are lots of inbound links being reported from some highly undesireable sites.

We are talking serious porn sites.

Needless to say, I'm not linking to them! In fact, on this particular blog, other than a few links (mainly to IM products) withing the text of some posts, there are no link lists or blogroll lists at all.

Comments are also turned off and Askimet has caught nothing.

So why, I wonder, would so many foul sites see fit to link to me? What possible advantage would they get from it?

Neither Google or Yahoo report any of these links - they only show up in AWStats.

Can anyone shed any light?

I'm not sure why this happens but it has happened to me too. When I check my stats I see inbound links from a couple of hardcore porn sites.

My site is not a blog either but a static website that sells my art work (G-rated art) and instructional DVDs.

    Hi Martin,

This is an old and common issue.

    It's similar to guestbook spamming.

They're hacking your Awstats to get links to their sites in your referrer logs.

I used to know all about this and how it's done when I has heavily into seo but it's been a while and I can't remember the specifics.

Basically it's just link spamming to help with their seo.

      Hi Mate,

From what I understand...the porn sites have
special software that spam themselves as a

They do this to generate traffic to their
site by spamming their link to thousands
of webmasters that are checking their stats.

Its nothing to worry about and it wont affect
your site...its similar to their own spider visiting
your site to show up in your stats.

      Take Care,

      Michael Silvester

If you grew up and went to public school in North America, you know that the school system here is far from perfect. Kids have all different experiences, but one common thread is that everybody learns how to be an employee and not a manager. School isn’t just designed to teach you math, science and English, there are also lessons contained in the actual structure of school itself. When you hear the bell and it directs you to class, you’re learning to follow directions in a very Pavlovian fashion. You know that you can’t get caught in the hallways during class time, so you respond to the bell in order to avoid punishment. When you go into the classroom and sit in your spot in the row of desks and you know you’re not permitted to talk to other students and that the teacher has control of the class, you’re learning that your place in society is to quietly submit to authority.

Just a quick question for you internet marketing gurus, or for those of you who have a bit of experience in marketing your own businesses. Which social media platform drives the most traffic to your website? Im obviously going to invest a bit of time and money in advertising my business through each of the main platforms, facebook, twitter, instagram etc. I was just wondering, more out of interest than anything (because as I said, I intend to utilize each platform to its max for my business) which of these social media platforms is responsible for the highest amount of visitors to your website?

I was reflecting on some of the things I have been working on over the past few months since I have been doing IM full time and I thought it's been a massive learning curve but I am making some progress. I've done a few little things that have helped keep me focused now that I don't have the physical motivation of a boss and a workplace surrounding me to crack the whip so to speak when I get a little lost and unmotivated during my work day.

Hey guys - I have a question that I've been thinking about a fair amount and wanted to discuss with all of you. SEO is one of the main areas of focus for internet marketing - there are a lot of people building websites and competing for search engine traffic. There is so much information out there about search engine optimization and you can virtually get lost for days trying to figure out what the best way is to promote your website or the product that you're selling through search engine rankings.
