Podcast Recording/Marketing Questions Please

Hi Warriors:

Hope it has been a great weekend.

I am wondering if you could please give me some information on Podcasting recording and marketing. I have been away from Podcasting for at least several years/. I was very active when promoting my books.

Sorry in advance if any questions seem stupid.

Can you tell me if my memory is correct on this. I recall when I had a desktop computer and it was Windows XP to record a Podcast all that was needed was recording/editing software and a microphone. You would set the source to "What you here" and record/edit.

I am sure I was informed years ago that if you have a laptop and Windows 7 you could not use any software to record a Podcast excluding something named "Total Recorder" because the other software would no longer recognize "What you here."

Am I correct on this and is it still true for Windows 7/Windows 8? Is this only an issue with a laptop or are Desktops for Windows 7/8 as well unable to record with most software?

Is there other software that has come out that you can record as you wish?

Finally please I vaguely remember that if you were Podcasting there were a few sites that you registered the Podcast so if you uploaded it to a website it would let it be known (I don't recall if the term was pinging). If this is correct where would I register the Podcast and has anything else changed in the last several years (regarding recording/editing/marketing)?

Thank you as always for your time.

All the best,
Craig

Craig, you can still create a podcast using your computer (these days, the difference in power between laptops and desktops is negligible) and a decent microphone.

My own research found that most of the software compatibility issues resulted from trying to run 32-bit software in 64-bit mode. By now, many developers, including Audacity (free, open source and powerful) have 64-bit versions available.

The one thing I would avoid is a microphone that plugs into your computer's mic jack. I know it sounds funny, but those mics tend to pick up internal noise, like cooling fans. Better to get a USB mic or headset.

Lots of threads on the topic here, just search for a bunch of recommendations.

As for sites to ping (yes, you got the term right), just do a quick search for "submit your podcast" and you should find enough lists to keep you busy for a long time. I'm a bit out of date myself, so I can't furnish any specific recommendations.

      Hi John:

Thank you for answering two questions of mine this week.

I always make sure to hit the thank you button.

I did not recall the issue (thank you) being 32 bit and 64 bit compatibility. It is so many years but I thought that folks from compute forums were telling me something about how the speakers on the computer are heard by outside software.

There may also be one additional step on the Podcast. The pinging is after you have recorded it so people are aware but when you first want to begin there were two sites that were recommended where you are actually doing something to get the wheels in motion.

Thank you again for your kindness and professionalism.

      All the best,
      Craig

Today, podcasting is pretty easy to do. To record a podcast you don't need a computer. Just use one of those digital voice recorders that you can buy from any store that sells electronics and then upload the recording to whatever podcasting services that you use to distribute your podcasts through.

There are many podcasting services that are available today, so make sure that you pick one that is best for you to use. Also pick one that will best suit your tastesand has the audience that you're trying to reach. Then use some editing software to edit the recording before uploading to the service, and there you have it, a good podcast.

You can use free software like audacity (free) and there is a great microphone called the Audio Technica 2100 which is less than $40 and its dynamic (won't pick up a lot of background noise), and its both USB and XLR (works with mixers). Be careful. With podcasting back in the papers there are TONS of services coming out the woodwork to "help" you podcast (many of them free) but in the end you get screwed. I've been doing it for 8 years and I've seen a lot of services come and go. In general, except for Wordpress and the PowerPress plugin, avoid the free stuff (especially Feedburner).

        Hi Dave:

        Hope you are well tonight.

You were kind enough to answer a Podcast question on this thread (I pressed the thank you button of course).

You mentioned something that was different than I was told 7-8 years ago. That was to stay away from Feedburner.

When I was actively Podcasting to promote the rock and roll books I have written, lectures, liner notes, etc. I had no clue where to begin. There was a fantastic person that walked me through everything. His wife at the time had one of the most listened to Podcasts in North America. He told me to set up some stuff on the Feedburner site. There would be no cost. Then he told me some other steps.

What makes Feedburner in your eyes a bad choice even as a free situation? Does that step still exist in terms of doing things with Podcasts/RSS Feeds? What is your recommendation?

Thank you for your time and have a great Tuesday.

        All the best,
        Craig

Yes it is. I think there was a brief period when it wasn't but they got that sorted out.
