is fatcow pricing steep?

I'm hosted at fatcow. I'm relatively new at this.

I want to get a domain + whois privacy protection. They are charging:

$15.99 for domain
$9.99 for domain protection?

Total $25.98

I feel that it is somewhat steep. How much are you guys paying for your domains? And how does this compare to fatcow?

They also dont allow 3rd party whois protection.

Both the domain and privacy pricing is steep. Take a look at GoDaddy and NameCheap to find significantly cheaper pricing. I think NameCheap may still be giving away free privacy protection actually.

    Go with NameCheap.

You get free privacy protection with domain registration.

Yes, that is quite steep. Plus, you don't want to buy your hosting and your domain at the same place anyway. Too much opportunity there for the host to hold you hostage. If you purchase your domain elsewhere, you can just change the name servers to a different host and keep on rocking if the host tries to give you crap over something.

Google "cheap domain name" and get a domain for 0.99 from Godaddy, plus $8.00 or so for the whois protection. Or go with Namecheap and pay $10.69 w/free whois protection, which will be cheaper in the long run as the Godaddy domain will renew at the full price after one year, which will run between $15-$20 or so depending on their offer at renewal time.

Fatcow is horrible. I recommend Hostica for $1 a month and $1 for first domain or iPage.

iPage is exactly the same as FatCow, both owned by EIG.

Buy your domain from namecheap and host your website with a different company in the same price range that's better like Webhostinghub or StableHost.

Yep it's steep. Pricing like that only really starts to hit your wallet when you have tons of domains in your portfolio. If you are only intending on having a few it's not such an issue, but if you're cranking out sites etc that is going to eventually end up being painful. Go with cheaper options from the outset.

Paid $30 for hostica. Figured good experience to compare the two. Just got the simple plan $1 for month + $1 domain (only one) + $12 for the privacy + $6 for set-up.

If I scale they tack $1.50 on my monthly bill per domain.

I'm going to tell the fatcow guys to deactivate my auto-pay for the second year just in case.

I just want to give an update. I went with hostica. I am a crucial point my launch.

Then I get a 403 access issue. This had been showing in the past and had been resolved multiple times.

They also do not have live support 24/7. So I am not in a good position until someone reads my ticket.

Next time, I'll pay extra to get live support 24/7. I need this FIXED NOW!!!!

I get my domains at Register.com for $0.50 each.
Just as good as paying $12+ for a domain. Haven't had a problem yet.

I use Dreamhost for hosting at $16 a year for unlimited domains, bandwidth, etc. I got it on a special coupon, though, so I don't know if that price is still available.

Dude.. pay 99 cents for your first two domains and then nail the other registerts and hit them up for their $1 registrations.. then pay godaddy $10 a pop.. but never pay for hosting.. most guys on here will let you use their dedicated servers for free or snag a resellers account for $20 a month and host unlimited..

Why you want to change FatCow only because of price, I think the price you will be worth investing. You can try out Namecheap as the customer support is quite good and also offer a good quality of product with one's reasonable means and even they have 14 day money back guarantee. With Namecheap it will be easy to transfer your domain that to with no fees and required renewal of Just $4.99. You can try out their service for free.
