Double Opt In Frustration

I recently have started collecting email addresses on my website at the end July after I started my website in January of this year. I don't have a large number of subscribers yet (98) but I currently have 28 people who signed up, but haven't confirmed.

Am I able to contact them? Send them a reminder? Things like that? Or do I just have to wait if they want to confirm their email address. Do I have any options here, or just plug away to get more subscribers?

This happens all of the time. It is not unusual... but what does your thank you page say after they sign up?

I have a custom Thank You page I created in WordPress that redirects to that. It basically says that the email will be sent to them shortly and if it takes a while, check their junk email.

Your first stop is the support area for your autoresponder or list platform. That will answer your questions about mechanics.

On a practical note, sending repeated "reminders" may get you crosswise of spam filters and/or blacklists.

It may be best to send a single reminder, if your platform supports it and will allow you to automate the task, then after a period of time, delete them.

People still use phony addresses, looking for single opt-ins that will give them their freebie, especially if your list is in the IM/MMO market.

Yea, I was told that repeat reminders may be damaging. So I probably won't do that. I did send one reminder though to all of them today. I'll monitor those for a few days but will not send any more.

Are you offering a freebie? If so, you might want to go with a single opt in and instead of making the freebie immediately available via a download page, state on you squeeze page that the freebie will be sent to them via the email provided. I use Aweber and that is what I do and have been very successful.

Yea, I'm offering a freebie. Actually, I tested 2 different freebies and this second one has gotten more response but they're not confirming. When they enter their email, it goes to a thank you page and then the download goes to their email. I have thought about single optin but have heard many bad things about doing that and will probably stay away from it.

The way I look at it now, is that those that confirm as the ones that actually care about the content than just receiving the freebie.

@amwarner - Yes, plug away to get more subscribers - you need to ramp things up on the list-building front. I applaud you for getting started and building your list but you need to make quicker progress - nearly a year has gone by since you started and you're not into triple figures yet. Start thinking bigger and don't worry about the ones that 'got away'.

Yea you're 100% right, I need to just still plug away and definitely think bigger and try to get more subscribers. Too much time has been wasted and lost.

This. You should simply focus on growing your traffic, building your list, and not worry about losing the people who weren't truly interested in joining your list to begin with.

You should test whether or not single optin brings you more sales than double optin. I wouldn't bother trying to email the unconfirmed subscribers. Keep getting leads and strive to convert them into customers.

Yep. That's exactly what I'm going to do. I'll test it for a while and analyze the numbers. And those that haven't confirmed yet I guess I'll just forget about them and just plug away and continue to get leads.

Definitely email the freebie out. Also change over to single opt in. There really isn't anything that can go wrong.

Really? Are there a lot of internet marketers out there using single opt-ins?

I've always gone double opt-in, and single opt-in has never ever been recommended to me.

      Have I been naive?

You have to look at it this way, if they didn't confirm - that just means that they really wasn't supposed to be on your list. I know anytime I subscribe for something, I make it a priority to confirm so that I can get whatever it is. But, through testing - I found out differently as to the REAL reason why most people don't confirm, and it comes down to them using fake email addresses.

I have so many instances where people use a fake email address to temporarily bypass the opt-in process, because they don't want the list owner to have their email. Normally, because they think they will always be able to download on the "Thank You" page, which is not always the case. The way to correct this is to state on your squeeze page that their "download" will be sent to their email address, so if they don't use their correct email address they won't get access.

Now, some will still try to bypass. I even have on my "Thank You" page, "If you did not use your correct email address, please click the back button to enter your correct email address in order to access your free report". For one, it deters people from using a fake email address, and two - it let's them know you take your opt-in process seriously Your confirmation rate will increase, and you're building quality subscribers in the 1st place.

Great tip with leaving that message about the fake email address, I implemented it right away and will be trying single opt-in for a while and see how that works.

Small business and bizop are the only two types that are using DOI, every other vertical is using SOI.

Not quite sure why people in the bizop/mmo vertical are so quick to embrace DOI. Nobody else is doing it.

Yes. I believe in an aggressive approach for certain campaigns.

Grab the email, add them to the list. Email them the freebie, and set the offer page as the 'Thank You.' In other words, this sales video is my special way of saying 'Thank you for being you.'

Then I email them and say 'Here's your freebie, I hope you enjoyed the video. You do realize that 'times'a'wasting. Click here to finalize the purchase etc.'

There's no beating around the bush this way

After a bit of aggression I revert to 'value adding' and send them nice information again.

There is nothing to be gained by using double optin. Most marketers have gone back to single optin now because there were too many leads being lost in the confirmation process. By using single optin you will get every single one of those double optin email address still but you will also have all the other email addresses that didn't confirm. So you always end up with more email addresses using single optin. No point going to the trouble of attracting visitors to your site and then throwing a percentage of them away through double optin.

Make the change sooner rather than later.

Don't use double opt in you'll lose 40% - 60% of subscribers because they're not going to go back to their email to opt in to your list a second time.
Stick with single opt in, you may get more unsubscribes but it'll pay off in the end.

I go with single and tell them freebie link, article etc will be via their email. If it bounces it gets deleted anyway.

People still use phony addresses, looking for single opt-ins that will give them their freebie, especially if your list is in the IM/MMO market.
I get around this by stating on my SP - Enter your best email, the download link will be sent to your inbox.

Phony addy means no freebie. But I am not building in the MMO/IM niche.
