Default Help From The Big Guns Plz

Maybe the wrong place but I have been everywhere else.

Since 2 day's ago I am plagued with pop unders. If i use Firefox, IE or AOL, I get them.
I've been in forums, downloaded free this and that and, even had to get something to get rid of this and that but, still getting the annoying b******s every time I click.

The only thing I did different on Friday was to dowload MSN so I could talk to someone on IM, I uninstalled after I finished.

Any help? I will Pay $1,000,000

You have a virus on your machine. You need to figure out what is the trigger.

If you are on XP trying using the rollback feature and go back a couple days before you started getting the popunders.

Start>System Tools>System Restore

It happens to the best of us... that's why we make backups and use multiple machines. Well that's what we should probably do anyways :P

You should really track this down in a tech support form that matches your hardware and OS.

Les,

Won't cost $1,000,000. You can do it for $70. Get Norton Internet Security 2009, install it and do a scan. The odds are very good it will find and remove the infestation.

Do that from safe mode, if you can.

Deal. Send me a 50% down payment, and I'll send you a new computer. Balance due upon receipt.

Or you could follow Paul's advice, which I don't recommend because it doesn't put money in my pocket. We all want a win-win, right? I get $1,000,000 and you get a new computer. With Paul's method, you're the only one that wins.

Les,

Download Spybot + Adware (both free), turn off restoration of the system, run pc on, press F8, go to safe mode, and run both Spybot + Adware.

In a couple of hours (yes, hours) hopefully you get rid of that.

Oh, do a re-check after first wave of spybot and adware just to be sure you're fine.

P.S. - When you're ok don't forget to turn restoration of the system ON.

Discover MiniSiteBox -- Yes, You get Professional Minisites... but you don't have to spend what others charge you for a "I've seen it before!!" sales page.

By the way... I know that a lot of people will see "Norton" and freak out. I understand that, as I absolutely hated their products for years. Nothing but bad experiences with them, and I mean REALLY bad.

PC Magazine recently did reviews of various Internet security suites, and gave Norton Internet Security 2009 the highest grade. They acknowledged their surprise, given Norton's past efforts. So, I tried it.

The bloody thing just works, and works very well. Hasn't slowed anything down at all, does an excellent job of handling intrusion attempts, and uses very little in the way of system resources.

I was stunned. Still, credit where it's due. This is one impressive bit of software.

As a former Norton user (nothing but trouble with them) this is almost
shocking to hear. Were it not for the fact that I am doing fine with
Kaspersky (since kicking Norton to the curb) I would give 2009 a try
if for no other reason than I know that if you say it works well, it must.

I still can't believe it though. I didn't think this company was capable of
making anything decent.

Yea! What he said!!

I use Avast which is free for the home user and I haven't had any problems since using it. Norton cost me a computer a few years back and that's why I switched.

Download Avast, run it including your memory and your done!

Good Luck!

Les,

Next time you get some pop-unders, maybe if you take a screenshot and post the image here it might give people more ideas.

Just a thought.

Les, try to run Spybot till he finds the bad script. When he reaches it, do a Google search on his name. Maybe its just a spyware and maybe you can remove him by hand.

On a serious note... A few years ago I had a similar pop-ups appearing regularly on a Win2000 PC. It was something to do with Windows Messenger. I had to disable it via Control Panel.

Les,

I don't know what version of Windows you are using and it's difficult to diagnose your problem without being able to see what you are seeing. Do the pop-ups/unders look anything like the one in the link below?

How to Disable Windows Messenger Service

Col,
The pop unders are exactly the same as the Firefox window I am looking at,
when I click on anything, say a thread in WF, another window opens behind the one I am looking at with an ad or video. This happens for every click so, in 5 munites I get about 10 browser windows open behind my main one.
Iv'e used everything suggested above, my main defense is Kaspersky.

I have to thrown my hat in the ring for norton here, too.

We threw it out many years back.. but with the advancements they have made, we've been using it over 4 machines now for most of this year and it is the top of the pack.

I highly recommend it, a year ago I would have said completely different

Peace

Here are my 2 cents

You might have to search manually for this malware in your pc. First we'll talk about software methods and then manual searching.

Software:
The home of Spybot-S&D! Spybot search and destroy usually finds stuff that anti-viruses miss.

AVG Free - Download Free Antivirus and Antispyware for Windows XP and Vista Lean & mean little anti virus program

By hand method:

1. Press ctrl-alt-delete and on the application tab see if there is anything there that does not belong if so, end task and see if it goes away. If it does, google the name of the application and remove it.

2. On the processes tab see if there is anything there that does not belong and end process and see if it goes away. If you find it, google how to remove it.

For what it's worth, I have to agree with Jay and the others - Norton HAS improved recently. We now use it on a few machines and, to date, we have had no problems.

On the other hand, we now also use McAfee on one of our PCs - I'm beginning to like that too.

I haven't used Norton in years for the same reason, but I do use them to check for viruses.

Go to Symantec - AntiVirus, Anti-Spyware, Endpoint Security, Backup, Storage Solutions and get a full scan of your computer from there. It will show you if there is a virus. It should then give you instructions on how to get rid of it.

Disable javascript for the moment, and see what happens when you open up the browser again.
