The 12 Rules of Internet Marketing

Here they are:

1. There are no set rules. You are the business and you set your own rules.

2. If you do not take proper action toward a desired outcome, you will never get the result you desire.

3. If you do not promote your business, you will fail. There are endless ways to promote.

4. If you don't take full responsibility for your own performance, you should fire yourself.

5. If you don't set goals and benchmarks, you'll never arrive at your destination.

6. If you don't ask for help, you'll never get it.

7. Every obstacle has a work-around.

8. Change is constant - deal with it or be left behind.

9. You alone care about your business. Everyone else cares about their own interests.

10. Originality is rewarded - sameness is a curse.

11. Money is never an "end" so it shouldn't be a focus or a destination.

12. Step up to stand out - if you don't others will and leave you behind.

The very best to each of you in your business pursuits.

Good list, and let me add one more:

    13. Tracking is vital. If you don't track where your visitors are coming from, you're setting yourself up for failure.

      Dudeman,

Your posting habits are very consistent. At times, however, your attempts to be cynical and find faults lead you to miss the point entirely.

Thank you for posting on this thread. Your opposition has confirmed that I have found a great set of rules.

Branding is vital, is all about reputation. Its everything. You should invest your time in building a reputation for yourself, become an authority in your specific market. Especially with thousands of people out there you MUST differentiate yourself. If you dont distinguish yourself from your competitors, if you dont "sex up" your products you are doomed to a low profit margin. With "sex up" i mean creating a specific "hook" for each and every product you sell. I think this is linked to your point #10.

In regards to point #3, i definitely agree. The biggest mistake people do is thinking that traffic will come by itself. WRONG.

They dont invest any cent on traffic and they wonder why they cant get sales. Paid traffic is the way to go to skyrocket your business to the next level. Certainly something to consider

    Like this.

In regards to #10, "Originality is rewarded - sameness is a curse." I'd like to point out that when it comes to certain things like niche/market selection, sameness is better than originality.

For example, if you know that there are thousands of rich women already paying $100 a month for weight loss information as evidenced by competition, ads in magazines, etc., it would be better to tap into that "sameness" somehow versus setting up your membership site on how frogs mate where there are no ads, no ebooks, and no rich frogs.

    Great list, Steve!

Here's one I'd throw in the ring:

    #13 - A blog is NOT a business

I spent way too much time in the past building up a blog and then trying to figure out how to monetize the traffic. If I would've focused on monetization before I got in too deep, maybe I would've picked up on the lack of viability in the niche much earlier.

Of course, your strategies will evolve with your business, but treating monetization as something to "tack on" later created a lot frustration.

I think it's important to start off thinking about monetization. Then you can figure out which route you want to take to get the right people to your site.
