The most damaging phrase someone new to IM can hear

"It's lonely at the top."

I hate this phrase. Fear of success can cause long-term damage. It can cause you to procrastinate, and you won't even notice.

Most people think gaining success means losing their old friends. They think that their old friends will be constantly asking them for advice/money/mentoring, or else that their friends will just resent them altogether. They think that their friends will resent the fact that they're making their work or business a priority.

While this is true to some extent, it's important to keep in mind that as you become more successful you'll make new friends and contacts. You'll always have equals, and there will always be someone better than you.

As you gain success, you can even help others up--those who were truly your friends from before you became successful. You will lose some of those "classic" friends along the way. This is inevitable. Some people just can't stand being around success because of their own deep-seated issues.

It's not lonely at the top--unless you're Scrooge McDuck.

It can be damaging because someone may subconsciously associate success with loneliness. Negative subconscious associates can create self-destructive behavior that a person isn't even aware of.
