ElegantThemes vs. Custom Themes

What do you prefer and why?

I prefer to get my designer and create something unique and spectacular for $5,000 or so. I know I can run with a premium theme offer for under $100 like ElegantThemes (and access a dozen of WP skins), however I prefer to have everything built from scratch.

Is it just me?

Some of the Elegant themes are spectacular but are not unique, although you customize them to some degree. The answer to your question depends from the goal of the site. For 90% of the cases it's better to buy a "ready to use themes" because you know how they look and what they do. And you know it now not in the future which is the case with building from scratch. Secondly they are much, much cheaper. For 5 000 $ you could buy a lot of themes.

I like buying ready-made themes and then having them modified slightly if they aren't 100% what I wanted. I can often find something that's what I want or close enough. I like Elegant Themes. I also like Studio Press - a lot. There are some great choices out there.

I think Elegant Themes has a lot of impressive looking stuff, but one issue for me is that you essentially "rent" the themes. The other is that because all or most of them are designed by one guy, from what I understand, there's not enough of a selection-especially when it comes to business related themes. It seems like it's more oriented towards personal blogs.

I'd actually rather go to a theme provide with thousands of choices where you pay one low price-Theme Forest is one example. I've seen other theme providers which are fairly inexpensive too.

You have a big heart spending $5000 on themes.
I won't dislike it as it's your own choice if you want to create a unique custom theme, but why just on themes only.

If I got enough money, I will definitely hire a full time designer to build it from scratch. I had yearly subscription of Elegant Theme, honestly speaking, it is just OK, far away from satisfaction. Themeforest is a better option than Elagant Theme as I found out it requires high standards for approving new themes.

I don't like Elegant Themes. I will also prefer to hire a developer for me to develop a unique theme for me!

The negative about Elegant Themes is that once you stop subscribing to their yearly service, they block access to the updates to the themes you already have.

I experienced this first-hand, so this is why I would never use theme again.

I was about to use Elegant Themes, but was put off by their annual charges.
I prefer Woo themes for my blogs.
