What are some effective ways to find and anlalyze your competition?

I think in order of priority, this is almost as important as determining the type of business to launch (in some ways even MORE important).

What are some of the best methods to searching/identifying your competition? And more importantly, once identified, how do you analyze the strength of your competition?

Thanks,
D

Do a search on Google for the product and or service you and they are promoting and see who comes up first in the organic listings as well as the paid listings. For the paid listings use something like spyfu.com to see how long they have been running ads, what the ads look like and what they daily ad spend is.

For both paid and organic listings see if they are collecting email addresses. If so sign up for their list and see how they do their email marketing.

That is really really broad as i'm not sure what the competition is in your case.

You haven't specified the type of business you're interested in. It's one thing to assess the competitiveness in the field of ClickBank products where many people are affiliates and use the blogging type of layout, or a completely other one when assessing the competitiveness of e-commerce websites.

Be a little more specific and you'll get much better answers.

      I use:

      Google Search
      Spyfu
      Compete
      Alexa
      Quantcast

      BUT:

I don't spend too much time on competition, and focus mostly on building a strong company. There is always competition, nothing you can do about it, at the end of the day, you may know all your competitors information but your business is still nothing.

So I don't suggest spending a lot of time on this unless you haven't started yet and are just trying to learn the playing field before selecting a niche or something.

I think by competition he means, how easy or tough to rank well in search engines for a keyword.

Actually, I mean from a "total" market research point of view. The most important part of any business plan is knowing the size of your potential audience/market. Once you establish your market, next stop is knowing who your competition is and how best to "out" compete them

    Hi Darrin,

the best way to find out who your online competitors are is to use the search engine(-s) you want to promote your website in. Just enter your targeted keywords in the selected search engine and check what sites are in top 10. These will be your top competitors.
