Where would i begin (advertising business)

Ok, this is my first post but i have been reading the forum today and i like what i see. There are alot of very knowledgeable people on this forum and it blows my mind with the amount of success most have with know how.

Let me start by saying i work for a small , but very good , lumber yard in my hometown. Lowes recently tried starting up here and it ended up not getting the nod to build because so many contractors and customers prefer us. I actually do outside sales and deliveries for our company and have been here well over 4 years going on 5. I'm 24 years old at the moment and am very driven. I know almost every contractor in my area being that i deliver to them daily. Everyday customers walk in the shop with the request of being referenced a good contractor to do work for them in which we will just give them a contractor that we consider a good friend and boom he gets the job. Contractors on the other hand are very competitive with other contractors and they will always ask me if i know of anyone doing any work. With me pretty much being the middle man ive came up with an idea that involves advertising. I'm considering starting a website that will be free to the local public to use and will cost the contractors. When customers go to this site they will be able to either search by contractors names, ratings, or the job they need done and then the site will direct them to their search. The customers can supply reviews , get quotes, or view pictures from the contractors previous jobs. I'll basically get some paperwork ready for when i pitch the sale of the advertisement to the contractors that will have them supply company name, jobs they perform, contact info, pictures of jobs done etc....

I'm thinking of charging a monthly fee, 6 month fee where they get 1 month free, or a yearly fee where they will get two months free. Contractors must pay up at beginning of month or be pulled from the site. If contractors would like to be featured on the homepage to be seen they could pay an additional fee and then be on homepage. I also have the idea of getting shirts made that will then put contractors logo and name on these shirts with a collage of other contractors and hand these shirts out to my coworkers to wear and be seen around town. I would also keep this local to about 30 miles so it would keep the contractors within a limit so they don't feel as if their fighting the world.

I believe since im around both customers and contractors daily it would allow me to be in good position to start this.

Whats $50-100/month to contractors who are making a lot more than this a day on jobs. Billboards and yellow-book are crazy expensive nowadays so why not. I have a friend who is capable of building a site and running it as well as starting a app for smartphones.

What would everyone think about this, please critique me and give me your thoughts.

feel free to email me as-well

I think that you need to think of this more in terms of your customer and what they will really get out of it before you get out of the feasibility stages, and get all excited!

How is this better / different from other sources of advertising that are more established?

What is in it for the customers leaving the reviews, as without them, I'm not seeing how things will work.

    How will you get traffic?

Then comes the question of money - how much will someone make out of such a system,in addition to what they're already doing, as you'd have to be under that number to make it worthwhile for them.

Personally I think you need to talk to people, ask them what they think, what they'd pay, how they'd use it and so on, and this will tell you what they will find useful, and whether it is worthwhile.

By the way, I also have a background in software, so have done this sort of thing many times, and the projects that fail are the ones that are poorly researched and thought out.

    Good luck!!
