What are some successful websites relying on curated content?

Hello Warriors,

Right as the thread title/question suggests, are you aware of any successful websites that rely on curated content for the most part?

For the detail-oriented, "most part" would be something like 80% curated (and 20% self-published).

Of course, success here means 'monetary success' - that is the biggest metric for any business, IMO.

The Huffington Post might be considered a successful website that relies on curated content.

If you consider being bought by AOL for $315 million to be "successful".

Aah! Yes. But I guessed it was obvious I wasn't looking for social networking sites though. Thanks anyway. And I get your point - Think BIG

Haha... Of course, $315 Million is the grand-daddy of super-successful. And I think 'The Huffington Post' is what most people refer to as the best example of content curation-based website.

I would be interested in seeing something niche-specific. Would you happen to know of any? Thanks

Exactly correct. I think that one is the most famous example.

Another one is YouTube but it's a little different approach. So Huffpost is probably the best example.

Curating celebrity news (as a niche)? A good example would be Perez Hilton.

I believe he first started that site from his bedroom, and while he gets some 1st hand celebrity news and interviews now (10-20% at most), the vast majority of his posts are curated from other sources.

He stood out from the crowd early on by picking fights with some celebs (that responded in kind) and by being otherwise controversial - ie. writing over top of celeb pix he didn't pay royalties to publish, and sometimes sued for it, etc.

He also outed some celebs - which most publications don't do - either because it was info well known in the gay community or from contacts he made in previous employment at gay publications.

And that's how a lot of curators make it big & move into the mainstream - be first and loudest with news that explodes. ie The Drudge Report with the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, and TMZ with video of ("Kramer") Michael Richard's racist rant at the Laugh Factory in 2006.

Most, but not all, small curator websites start with virtually 100% curation from other sources, and gradually increase unique content as they become better known and get some clout in their field (ie. sources come to them). Meanwhile, keep an eye out for something exciting - particularly if it relates to someone everyone knows and is controversial - and then be first and loudest about it online.

      Nice info there. Thanks

I'm planning to run a curated content site in the "business" space (not going to go so broad though, obviously).
