How Much Do You Spend on Product Creation?

Hello Warriors,

I am doing a little budgeting and I wonder how much you all invest in an ebook that sells for say $7?

That would include hiring someone to write the ebook, sales letter, design a minisite etc.

Your input is appreciated.

Thank you.

Clement

I have paid very little for product development.

The only think I've paid for has been for "artwork."

But, if you want the whole shebam - there is so many variables. You can probably get someone to rehash some PLR for $50. Make a sales page for $50. And call it a day.

Or, you can spend thousands of dollars and lots of time into creating a product.

Depends what YOU want to spend.

Great, thank you for the input.

I thought cheap maybe not come good and good definitely does not come cheap. Especially content.

I can develop the ebook myself but it is taking me a lot of time.

Any idea to speed things up in a cheaper way?

(Yeah, I am cheapskate, I know. A Chinese will always be a Chinese, I supposed).

I do keyword research, even for the huge product launches.

I create most of my products myself so it keeps the cost really low.

You could use fiverr for cheap graphics? I always find making an eBook look good takes a lot of time!

Some money on artwork .. maybe $100 on istockphoto.com and then around $500 for logo and e-book cover. But pretty much only spend a dime on artwork/photos when it comes to content.

I never really spend anything because I design the sales letter video, site, offer, etc myself.

I'm a believer in doing as much of it yourself as you can, at least when it comes down to developing the product. The reason is because you're going to tend to know how to do it in a way that someone you hire wouldn't; they wouldn't have the knowledge or passion to develop your product the way you would yourself.

I created all my products myself and they cost nothing to produce.
Software, ebooks, videos training courses - all have sold well each month for 15 years.
Occasionaly I pay for a graphic from Fiverr, but that's about it.

I do my own writing and pay for graphics and covers which is around $100. I don't use Fiverrr because I don't know if they're getting the images legally. I use a designer I personally trust.

Part of the cost will depend on whether you want a mediocre product that will make a few sales or whether you want to wow your buyers to come back and buy more products from you in the future.

If you're changing niches with each product then return sales are not an issue. If you're trying to show you are an expert in a specific area then put out a product that proves that fact. Which means that even if you start with PLR, you'll add your own story, personality and research from other sources.

I create all my products myself. Most of my products come with software or is software. I used to do all the programming my self but now outsource to other programmers.

I also outsource the art work most of the time and that is usually around $150.

    All the content is mine.

    Best regards,

Making "cheap" ebooks never made any sense to me. Paying a fair price for quality does.

Depending on your strategy, your ebook will either be your main product (value) to your customer keeping in mind that a good deal of your future sales will depend on how your ebook is perceived AND how positive the reviews/word-of-mouth is.

So, you spend $100 to create a so-so ebook, you will sell very little

I'm also not a big fan of completely outsourcing your ebooks. I typically like to control at least the detailed outline for what content makes its way into the ebook and how it is organized (since information products depend heavily on having material in the right order and well layed out)

If you then use the premise that you will outsource the actual writing (for your own outline) and outsource the design as well as cover - here are some approximate estimates based on some recent projects we and our customers have experienced

    1. Content writing: $100/ 20-pages
    2. Design: between $150-$300 for a 60-80 page ebook
    3. Graphics: Anywhere from $40-$60 for ebook graphic only, or $80-$100 for matching website graphics. Yes, you can get less expensive but the quality and design expertise is very often not there. Frankly, I would rather pay someone I KNOW will give me a great result for $80 than hunt among hundreds to find the one person that can do it for $20. My time is worth far more!

Your ebook CAN earn you a 5-6 figure income or become a very powerful lead generator AND ends up branding you and your business for years to come...I would never suggest someone try and save $200-$300 bucks when you can earn that back in a couple days of decent results.

Unless I acquire the cost to resell rights for a particular product I pay 0.

I'm speaking strictly in terms of information products here.

I love to write and create videos so typically I do all of it.

    There are exceptions of course.

I have video introductions made and sometimes book covers made. (Though I enjoy making book covers these days).

Additionally... What about the cost of training that you can use to help make your products better?

    Does that count?

    Wow, thank you guys.

    Your input is valuable.

Now I know that I am not the only one who develops the information product myself.

Not only about the cost but the reason and quality behind it.

For me, it's pretty much everything, I do all my own coding, graphic design, ebook writing and sales letters. I enjoy the technical stuff and get great satisfaction out of completing a project.

  • Depends what you need done. I have 3 full-time programmers, 2 writers, and I spend a few hundred every month on graphics. In total it costs me over five grand a month.

It doesn't matter if you are going to sell it for $7 or $17 or $47 - to have something of quality constructed for you that means the author / creator will have to spend time on research. compilation. writing. design. graphics. All for something they themselves are not going to be making multiple sales on.

So a better question would be, how long is the ebook for sale to be, and how technical is the topic - ie : how much research might it take - because that's a better benchmark for how much outsourcing quality product creation will cost.
