Why do family and friends think internet marketing equals get rich quick schemes?

Today I was talking to my sister about some thing when she brought up that what I do is trying to get rich quick. She thinks this because I was a bit of an opportunity junky as a teenager, but have moved on from that. What I have seen though is a lot of people seem to think like her. If you tell them what you do they expect you to work from an office in a building. When you tell them you work from home they assume you are into some get rich quick scheme and they judge you for it. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Everybody I know thinks the exact same thing.

Only significant results will change their minds.

Probably because the get-rich-quick types are the ones hollering from the rooftops about they got rich quick and you can, too. The only thing that can mess up your success is working hard and keeping your eyes open.

The folks running honest businesses, especially those outside of the IM/MMO space, are far less visible. Many actually shun the spotlight preferring long term profits to an endless hustle.

Plus I think it's because work at home type businesses have so long been associated with "schemes". Many people don't seem to realize that you can run a legitimate business from home on the internet.

A few years back, I had a conversation with a friend of mine. We spent 45 minutes talking about salesmen. He thought they're all fishy scammers...

I guess it's just misconceptions people have. Once you clear them out, they will be fine.

When I told someone recently I did internet marketing she thought it meant Pyramid MLM schemes.

There are lots of scams everywhere from making money stuffing envelopes to the pyramid schemes that claim that you can make millions of dollars working from home. Many people probably believe that making money from home is a scam because they were either victims in the past or they have heard nightmare stories from others' experiences.

Get over it. It's mainly those from an older generation - who can't quite grasp what the internet and marketing is all about - that are quick to shout down anything related to it. That's because they simply don't understand it . . having not done it themselves.

It's the same in all walks of life. When I was a promising young footballer my seniors slated me and said "You'll never make anything of yourself with that, why not go for a trade apprenticeship (plumbing, joinery, etc) instead". I ended up playing professional football, and they ended up watching me in the stands every week.

    Don't lose faith.

That's why i just tell people i'm a "marketing consultant"... then give them a business card that solidifies the thought in their mind instantly.

Family members and friends ignore many things. The truth is that making money online takes time.

My family used to tell me that I was merely playing with the computer in the beginning of my online adventures.

In the beginning I was basically spending money, but I was not playing. Their opinion about my online business changed when I started having positive results.

Maybe because that's what a lot of people are told, expect, dream about when they venture into IM?

Example: Quickest way to make huge money online?

Because they're afraid of what they don't know..
Because they are not entrepreneurs at heart..
Because they only know how to work for other people and not for themselves..

I don't even bother sharing with them anymore because the questions are endless I just tell them that I'm a freelance web designer (which is also true) but I leave it at that... But that's another problem.. and then THEY ALL NEED A WEBSITE!

Most people are brought up to be robots. Go to school and get a job. If it isn't working for someone else or going to a brick and mortar location people don't believe it can be done.

My thing now is just to keep what I do to myself for the most part. I don't have time to answer questions and even when I show people checks they still don't believe it.

My thing is don't try to explain anything unless they are willing to learn what you know. Other than that show them better than you can tell them.

I think a lot of it depends were you are from. NYC or SoCal, nobody questions your work. In other places they usually don't know anyone who does it.

  • Because that is what so many internet marketers promote. There is also more scammers than honest marketers. I hate it. I won't even tell people I am an internet marker because they have such a crap reputation. It is embarrassing. But if you are honest and ethical you will build a reputation and that is more important than trying to make a quick buck.

Well consider two things, generally, people promoting work from home type arrangements (MLM, IM, etc.) sell a story of large amounts of money fast and easy. Then, most of the people who pursue it are looking for that. Third, most people don't get those results. So when you combine those three factors is it any surprise people assume by going after such opportunities that you're trying to "get rich quick"?
