Default Facebook Groups and Ads

I know some people have used Facebook ads without much success, but I am wondering if there is a better way of going about it, for example create a catchy group/page and advertise THAT instead using Facebook ads. Once people have joined the groups, you can leverage these users multiple times.

For example I had a Job site I ran. I created groups on facebook like:
I need a Job!
Being unemployed sucks!

You guys see where I am getting at? I hope I can get some feedback from this

(Ive never used facebook ads yet)

I have been using Facebook groups for
quite some time now, and so far, I can
honestly say, that if you do it right, you
beat the facebook ads to the ground and
do not spend any money what so ever.

It helps if you can build a FB page that goes hand in hand with your branding. I posted an example of this a few days ago but no one seemed interested!
How Many of You Are Using Facebook in Your Marketing?

I just browse and join groups and then post threads. I actually get some traffic from this. I also request a lot of friends and update my status every day. I prefer that to twitter. Everyone on twitter these days is just their to advertise haha.

The American dream must be earned..

Overall I like the idea about inviting people to join groups. I believe it will be time consuming, but if someone can pull it off than it will serve in lot of ways.

Facebook doesn't convert very well. I have noticed that on certain types of CPA offers do very well. Usually if Oprah says it is good the offer will convert better on Facebook but not like Adwords.

I've heard a lot about marketing on Facebook before, but I never tried it. If anybody marketed on Facebook and had some success, I would really like to hear about it.
