Help With Forum Commenting Strategy

I've been working as a Copywriter/SEM for a month or so. This is my first full-time job. Previously, I did only freelancing as a writer.

As part of the strategy for this site, I am doing guest posting, doing a sponsorship campaign, blog commenting (for links and guest post opportunities), social media account management and writing all the content for the website, blogs and any other writing requirements that pop up. I'm only one man...

This is the problem. My boss would like me to keep trying forum posting. After trying it before, I was banned from most of them (live and learn). If I do this again, I'll have to spend a considerable amount of time posting without links, build authority and then start to post links where it's relevant. Is this really an effective strategy? It seems like a lot of work for not a lot of payoff, considering the other strategies we have going. I feel that the blog commenting is an effective short term strategy and guest posting is an effective long term strategy.

Can anyone set me straight on this? I really have no formal training on marketing, so any help would be appreciated!

I think it depends on the authority rankings of the forums you're on. I have a client who focuses on guest posting but does allow some forum posting in between; but he requires the forum relationships to be well-established before his site is linked to or even mentioned in any other post. It's always relevant - the forum, the niche, the post. We add value to every community we participate in. It does take a long time, but it's ethical and can have long-term value.

Thanks Deborah. That helps. Hopefully more people reply, too.

Is it average for one person to have that much responsibility in marketing on a daily basis?

Instead of a "forum commenting" strategy, I'd look more to a "forum community participation" strategy. Find 1-5 forums which your ideal customers frequent and simply participate. Don't hide who you are or who you work for, but don't even borderline spam the forum.

Use a link to an opt-in freebie if allowed - one custom tailored to that forum.

Can you explain what a 'link to opt-in freebie' is, please?

It sounds as if you were posting links in your replies themselves. The idea is to use signatures.

That... makes some good sense. Thanks James. Maybe I can revamp my strategy a little.

What you are describing is not "marketing", you are talking about spamming...
That is not a good long term strategy.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

As an example, posting links to your sites is not allowed here, so I imagine that there are plenty of forums that consider it spam also. Participate in the community and use a signature link, but do not refer to it ... like ... please check out my signature. That's the same kind of spam as dropping the link in the post to start with.

Saleguru, yeah, I completely agree with you. I would rather not implement it as part of the strategy, because I really don't think it's the most honest way to go, but my boss is my boss. I have to follow his rule unless I can give him a good enough reason not to.

Sbucciarel, I think I will try that out, while simply adding some value to conversations in a forum and see how it goes.

Blog hopping can be a good strategy for driving traffic. Choose a blog that gets a decent amount of comments on each post and try to comment early when a new post is published; that way more people will read your post and if you are using "comment luv" or an avatar they can link back to your blog.

Most importantly make sure that your comment adds value to the post or nobody will feel inclined to link back to your post. It's crucial that you can interest others enough that they would like to visit your site. Look at it from their point of view why should they visit your site?

Thanks Gordon, yeah, this is part of the strategy already. I'm always on the lookout for new posts with Comment Luv

If you can become a trusted member in the community you can drive a lot of traffic to your links. The key is being smart and patient. It does take a lot of work. You have to give a lot before you get.

The reason to do this is that forums tend to be very focused on a particular topic. You can funnel a lot of qualified traffic to your links.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

Thanks Ghoster This is really what I think will be of the most benefit. My intentions are to simply increase our authority, and give people an impression that we are helpful, not just when it turns into a sale for us. It seems to be the new marketing strategy for many, but some are still stuck in their old ways.

Let's say your outfit sells fishing boats.

In your signature, you would offer a free report or white paper on "How to pick the right boat for your family", and link to a landing page where they could join your list to get the report and boating news, tips and special deals.

That would appeal to someone looking for a boat, but not to the general freebie-hunter.

Why dont you outsource a bit? I suggest quicksporut and v7n as forums. You have to know the traffic level of the forums too and you know on WF is the biggest forum
