How viral marketing works? and how to get viral?

I've been an internet marketer and affiliate marketer for the past 2 years now. Being in this ecosystem we all know the fact that the most successful IMers and Internet entrepreneurs have set huge trends and changed the world by just getting viral some by their work, some by their influence or some by their product or service or in some or the other way.

Okay now straight to the point, I really wonder how exactly viral marketing works and how to actually get viral with our promotions and websites as I am and I guess most of the IMers or entrepreneurs are really looking forward to experience it at this point of time.

So overall my question is what according you'll are the best and most legit ways of getting viral? Why?

I welcome you all to share your thoughts or tips on getting viral and viral marketing.

Your replies are much appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Avish

I had three articles go viral on a previous blog I started, which is what really got my internet business started. I had no idea beforehand that these articles were going to go viral, but looking back there are a few insights I can extract with an emphasis on content marketing:

    1. Making a product or service go "viral" is easier with content marketing, because you have more chances to fail with your content and when your content is picked up, as a by product, your product or service gets attention.

    2. Including lists or links to other people in the industry or community is a good way to get those individuals to share your articles and increases the chance your article will be picked up by other blogs.

    3. Provide an incentive for people to share or comment. Always ask yourself when you hit publish or ship - why would people want to share this? Buzzfeed does a great job of this, in the same way that chain mail did. Paypal had it built into their product.

    4. Writing on a topic that hasn't been covered yet is a great way to get to the top of google. When larger blogs and publications are researching that topic, they are more likely to link to your company's blog or website because your article is first for those keywords. This is how I got links from Hypebot, Shopify, and Mint.

    5. Keep putting out content and products. It seems like a no-brainer, but it increases the chances that something you're doing will resonate and be shared.

Great.. Thanks for sharing such wonderful tips. Okay so here I have understood that the unique content is the best way to get viral and get to the top of search engines. Once you put up that unique content in the right sources other blogs and websites automatically pick it up and share in their own network.. I am surely gonna implement this strategy..

To get something to go viral:
    1. You need something of REAL value that people will find so useful/helpful/cool, they actually want to share it with their friends.

    2. A built-in and EASY method of self-replication.
    That's it!

Here's a simple strategy i use to spread my content virally.

    1. Make a top ten list style blog post related to your niche. For example, let's say i had a website in the golf niche offering golf advice. My blog post would be something like "Top Ten Golf Instructors" In the blog post make sure to link to the sites of the golf instructors.

    2. Before you make your Top Ten list make sure whatever you feature has a strong social media following.

    3. Now once you have your blog post published. Go tweet the golf instructors you featured and ask them to tweet you link. If they have a significant following you can expect alot of traffic. Especially, if you get all ten to tweet you link.

This works because people like to be recognized. It is good publicity for the instructors.
Anyways you can apply this strategy to any market. Basically, find something or a list of things you can feature in a blog post. Then have the sites or people you featured tweet or share your post to their social network.

Great!! to know that.. I am gonna implement this strategy very soon.. Here I understood that people are really looking for resourceful content that can really help them in achieving their goals or objectives and when you provide them with the same they really want to share it with others..

While this may be a good way to attract targeted traffic, and it is, it's not the same as something "going viral". It could lead to that, but is not in and of itself.

A list like this, however, IS a good example of the kind of content with the potential to spread virally. In addition to having shareable content and an easy means of sharing, it also requires a bit of luck.

Let's say that one of your top ten golf instructors just happens to be praised by this week's PGA winner. That name is going to be hot for a time, and you have a fair chance of some viral spread - at least until the next golfer gets hit in the crotch with a golf ball or drives a cart into the pond...

As an IMer, you are looking for specific markets you can identify, capture and sell to. These are commonly known as niches, a much more profitable scenario than whipping up content in the hopes of going viral. It's a waste of time.

No. You create content that is specifically helpful to your niche audience and keep on it consistently. That is where the money is my friend.

Now you do still want to create content that is shareable, but that generally has nothing to do with going viral either. Neither does software that helps the sharing. That is just another form of push marketing. Viral content, by it's nature is unpredictable, and often uncontrollable once in the market place.

So, the question should be, "How do I create content that is valuable enough to be share-worthy?" Here are some books that can help you with that -

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die: Amazon.ca: Chip Heath, Dan Heath: Books
Contagious: Why Things Catch On: Jonah Berger: 9781451686579: Books - Amazon.ca
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference: Malcolm Gladwell: 9780316346627: Books - Amazon.ca
Thanks for directing me there my friend.. But the thing for which I am finding ways of literally going viral is that I have started dealing with affiliate marketing in an ecommerce style and my startup includes products and services of multiple categories and niches.. After reading your tip I understood that creating content that is shareable and creating a value is important.. I am surely gonna focus on that..

Alright.. Its seems that getting viral needs much more than just a good content.. But then at the same time implementing the strategy can create influence among those who have read the article.. Going viral can happen if they find it really useful so here I agree that it does need luck..

There has been many academic studies on going viral and they found some interesting things. Going viral is about having good content and something worth sharing naturally, but there is one other element.

Let me explain it with the case of visual.ly (I know staff there personally so got this story direct). They launched and within the first week they got over 10 million hits.

Impressive right? Well yes, but it wasn't actually their launch. It was their 3rd launch. The first two flopped.

The first made them take down the site completely. The second make them completely rethink their strategy so they launched the third time with almost the exact same product.

What they did, was look at research about what makes something viral. That something is actually multiple somethings. In 50 somethings.

You need over 50 influencers to promote your content for it to stand a chance of going viral.

That mean making a video and simply posting to Youtube will not make it viral, no matter how great the content, unless you get lucky and 50 influencers find it and promote it within a short space of time.

Quite often, you have to plan those influencers. That is why big companies pay for promotions and schedule reviews in magazines/influencing websites to all happen within the space of a few days.

Each 'influence' adds to the effect and yet allows enough time for a slight viral effect to take hold. The reviews/influencers then help add momentum to your content's viral coefficient.

This is what good product creators do (some of which you will find in the WSO section). They create an army of affiliates. They give them the right material and help them plan the launch, that will be announced within a short space of time. Each message might reach a slightly different audience but some will cross over, helping people to remember you and recommend you... creating a viral effect.

The magic number here is 50 influencers....

As much as you seem to want to believe there is a magic formula for forcing virality, there isn't. All you can do is set up favorable conditions and, like a batter facing Mariano Rivera in his prime, swing and hope you make contact.

Even in the case cited, it took three tries to hit the ball.
