Default Problems with Hosting

Last night while I was working on one of my websites, they all went down. I checked the company's home page and their site was down too. So I got their phone number from my Paypal account and called them. They said they were working on it. My sites came back awhile later but went away again about fifteen minutes after that.

This morning, still no websites. I called them again. They were working on it and they should be back up in 2-3 hours. So I waited. It's four hours later and still no websites. I'm sure they put their higher-paying customers further up on the list, but even with shared hosting at $20/month, I expect things to be fixed more quickly than this.

So my question is: What is your experience with web hosting companies? I am looking for a new one, whether as a backup or replacement I haven't decided. What company are you with? How long have you been with them? Have they had any outages and if so, how long did it take for things to get up and running again?

I use Hostgator with their "Baby Croc" account. I can recommend them if you like?

You have to make sure that you've backed up your sites beforehand of course.

Hope everything gets back to normal before you switch.

I like to spread my sites out for safety reasons. (Call me paranoid)

Shared hosting: I recommend www.Lunarpages.com

VPS & Dedicated: www.WiredTree.com
WiredTree.com is my top pick. I never have problems, and if I need a question answered, I don't wait hours for a response. Usually get a response within 15 min. Hands down my favorite host

HostGator is my choice too. They went down once this year. but have no problem with them till now... Monitor your website Hyperspin Website Monitoring, Web Server Monitoring Service and see how many times your current host go down in a month. If possible switch the hosting company.

I only use Hostgator. I don't think they can be beaten for service and up time. Also has a toll number that is answered 24 hours a day, by people who knows what they are doing.

If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll just keep winning what you've always won.

Do the thing you fear the most, and all other fears will go away.

I'm probably the only one who doesn't recommend HostGator. I tried them once and I was not impressed when my site went down the next day. Based on the positive reviews, I thought maybe I was just unlucky and gave them another chance. Guess what happened? downtime again.

I spread my sites around a bit as well. One hosting company (UK based) offers great support. Another good one (US based) has amazing support - but I also pay an extra couple of bucks a month to have offsite backups of my sites ... I also use a babycroc on hostgator - but not for my main sites. Call me eccentric, but I've also got one site on yahoo hosting (just to test it out).

.... The most important thing of all is to keep upgrading to the most secure version of scripts - it's a total pain sometimes, but there's a whole armada of people who want to hack your web site ...

The best place for hosting questions is Web Hosting Forum | Discussions on Hosting Services & Companies. I spent about 20 hours researching, starting there and then at the sites that looked good before I committed to hosting.

Especially once you get your choices narrowed down to 2 you can do a search there and often get direct comparisons about one aspect or another between the 2. I went with hostpc.com. If you are just starting out they have unlimited domain packages for about a quarter the price of Hostgator.

No downtime that I know of and I have thoroughly tested them out about answering stoopid questions and they don't seem to mind. However their reseller plans are not really good (by my totally unique requirements) and if I have to get one I will probably move to uberhost.net, or possibly even HG.

WHT is a really interesting forum. If you are ever bored, lonely and have absolutely nothing better to do, (just one of my little, or maybe tiny jokes). It is a nice place, and you do tend to learn there. They have a nice web design section.

best wishes, lloyd

I host my own and personally work with all my clients on a one on one basis. Ecityweb Tech Services. I had to end up getting a rack and doing a dedicated server space. I got tired of Hostgator and others. I typically charge higher about 10.00 a month than like the Hostgator peeps. Sometimes less money is not always the best.

It's always a good idea to have a backup of your site because it's very rare to find a host with 100% uptime guarantee. If you are using Cpanel... it's easy to generate and download the full backup of your site from your control panel.

I'm using hostgator for one of my websites but is not part of my signature here. I have very good experience with them. They are ok and professional.

Hosting will have times when the servers go down - all hosting is subject to that.

An advantage I've found using a large company like Hostgator is they have the personnel to address a problem quickly and the few times my sites have been down with HG it's been minutes rather than hours or days before they're up again.
