Buying a niche website...

Hi All,
So, I'm in the early stages of buying a website (I don't have any specific prospects in mind yet). I'm looking to buy something small, under $15k.
So, I've come across a lot of sites on Flippa which cater to niches I'm not an expert in: for example, I've come across some websites that focus on MMA fighting, on MLB, and some on Smartphones.

Would it be feasible for me to buy and operate one of these types of websites, all the while paying others who ARE experts in these niches to write the articles on the website for me?

Does this happen a lot, or do operators of these niche websites write their own articles, and are they subject matter experts in these niches?

Thanks for your help!,
Chris

It is not unusual to run a website on content you know little about.

CEOs know how to run a company - doesn't mean the know how to create a financial report.

But, 15k sounds like a lot of money - especially if you're kinda new...or just kind of thinking about it.

Unless you have deep pockets - I'd go smaller scale at first...figure out some of the kinks/issues...make sure you can do it...and go from there.

    My 2 cents.

      I completely agree.

      A few things to consider.

If you're not passionate or interested in the topic, maybe it isn't the right move. I've bought websites before, but I tend to neglect/do a half-hearted job with site topics I am not interested in or passionate about because I don't know the audience and market well enough to feel confident in what I'm doing. Outsourcing is a good idea to negate this, but might not negate everything.

Careful of websites for sale. They're for sale for a reason and the seller mightn't be upfront about his motivation for selling. Not saying don't buy sound investments with solid returns, but just err on the side of caution.

Not to put you off the idea, but I'd personally be more comfortable putting 15k in diversified shares than 1 website.

      Thanks for the reply!!!
So... yeah.. I reckon 15k might be a bit too much.
On another note, how easy IS it to find knowledgable bloggers/ writers to add relevant content to a niche site?
      All the best!
