Wordpress as a Membership Site / Login Options?

Hey folks, I recently read a similar thread about using wordpress as a membership site. There were some really nice scripts and plugins discussed.

However, what I am trying to do is create a wordpress site for members, but it's a free membership and I don't want to have a registration page available to the public.

My basic need is to have a login/password block in the sidebar for members where I can establish the logins and provide them to those who are authorized to have them.

I know I can password protect posts, but can anyone help me or direct me to either a script or method to set this up? What would be really cool also is to be able to provide a sign up link for my members and they can set their own logins, whatever...

Ideally the way I want to set this up is to have a static page setup on my blog, then the rest of the content over the blog and pages need to be password protected for members only.

Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I would just use Joomla instead of Wordpress... but then again, I am a huge fan of Joomla and avoid Wordpress whenever possible

Yeah, joomla does look really sweet. I have seen some really nice looking joomla sites as well. When I looked into using joomla it was back when I was just starting to get into making my own sites. I found it a bit confusing at the time but maybe I should have another look at it now.

However wordpress is just so simple and fast to use and set up it just works out great.

You can do this quite easily with DLGuard - basically you just install DLGuard on your website, create a membership group in DLGuard, and then it'll give you a small snippet of code which you paste at the very top of your header page.

I can show you a way to make it display the static front page, as well, without requiring a login.

Then, to add people to the membership you can just use the Import feature in DLGuard - you just fill out their details, and DLGuard will send them a login URL and login details.

Let me know if you'd like me to clarify any of this, happy to help!

    cheers

    YourMember does this.

Set it up as "Free" in YourMember. Then disable registration.

When you make a private post, check off the "Free" access level.

    Done.

Then, simply add the users manually.

Later on, you can charge if you want.

Set up your site as a CMS and use pages for content.

Then use the side bar login plugin and the page restriction plugin and alternativley you can just tick your pages and posts as private..

This allows you to add a side bar login and just disable anyone can register in your settings.

The page restriction plugin allows you to lock pages so people can not seem them unless logged in.

This allows you to manage the whole thing very easily.

PM me if you want more detail.
