Can someone fill me in on giveaways?

INTERNET MARKETING

I've seen a number of people talking about these lately but don't really know exactly what's being referred to. I mean, obviously I understand what a giveaway is, but is it a recent thing in the IM space? Seems like just the last few weeks I've seen it pop up a lot.

Though giveaways are not new to IM, recently i've noticed many changes. Instead of just one person giving away his product, a group of people joint venture on a mass giveaway spree.
Joint marketing + multiple baits = leading to batch list building.

  In JV giveaways, many people pool together their products and have the list of people who optin to get the products. =)

  And where does one find these upcoming giveaways? I've seen a lot of posts that say "participate in some giveaways" but I've never seen any posts anywhere that one is being organized.

  JV giveaways are AWESOME. Built 30% of my list from them, easily.
  
  Start participating in them and promoting them to get higher up the rankings. With the greater exposure, your higher ranking will get you more subscribers.

  Fabian is right - it's a pretty solid tactic for list building if you're a contributor.
  
  They are by no means a new tactic - Mark Hendricks was one of the first with his 12 Days Of Christmas giveaway (ongoing for years now).
  
  The reason you're seeing more of them is that there have been giveaway hosting software available recently that automates things for the host. I should warn you though, not all givewaways are equal...I've been in events which have yielded very poor results. There is also a fairly new trend where giveaway hosts are charging between $29 and $49 (typically) for contributors to get "points" towards their gifts - effectively, it's pointless trying to participate unless you go for the upgrade.
