Pingomatic help

Hello all

I have just for the first time and after taking advice from here pinged my blog post using Ping o matic.

But I'm pretty new to all of this and Google isn't helping so can someone tell me please?

1) What exactly is a 'ping'
2) How do you measure if pinging is working?
3) I have pinged my latest post, can I go ahead and ping more from the same blog in the same day. or is this a waste of time
4) If I pinned posts from last week or month does this have any positive effects at all ?

    Pingomatic is a service which alerts (pings) multiple RSS aggregators/search engines in one action when there is a new post on your blog. This saves you from having to register your blog to all of the services individually.

    It pretty much allows the search engines to find your site.

    One way to measure is how easy it is to find on the search engines.

    There really isn't a ping testing service that i've found yet.

    You should ping all your posts. Don't do it too fast because that is an easy way to get your ISP blocked.

    I'm not sure what you mean with question number 4.

    A ping allows the search engines to find your posts and pages faster. That is all. It could help in the overall ranking of your page but isn't the deciding factor.

    Ping does not help to rank your site. It can help your site to get indexed at search engines quickly. By pinging your site's posts, you are letting the search engines know about the changes taken place at your site. Hopefully they will index them soon.
