Flippa buyer refuses to confirm their name, scam or makes sense ?

I have just spent too much time today dealing with a buyer who either is using multiple identities on flippa or is letting his 'associates' use his account for buying.

When I sold my listing to him last week, he delayed paying and said after making a purchase via Flippa, that Paypal put his account under review.

When he finally could pay, he claimed he couldn't use the flippa paypal button.
He asked for an invoice.

He paid the invoice and I instantly transferred the domain and website to him.

Fast forward and he complained about my very helpful support team that services my customers via Freshdesk.

I suggested sending all information via snail mail. He then flipped out and said he wanted a refund.

It seemed odd that he would oveereact to my suggestion that I send him materials for the website.

I told him I would refund him but asked him to verify his name.

More anger and venom.

He proceeded to say that I don't need to know his name. And thats it's none of my business.

Long story short, but this joker appears to have his phone number under a different name, paypal under different name and generally be shady.

I called paypal to try and see if I can ensure the return of my domain if I issue a refund.
They said they dont handle return of digital goods.

I suppose it's just as well since the buyer continued to verbally insult me and even said he might resell the name if I don't refund him asap.

A truly wearying experience.

Overall I have quite nice buyers. It's just been this loon and one other guy who make me scratch my head.

So am I being improper in expecting to know the real name of the person buying from me ?

He wasn't using a corporate name, even that would be fine.

Thanks.

Don't waste time and report this matter to Flippa asap.

Report to flippa but you should always use escrow when selling your working business.. No point in having to deal with these creeps, let escrow handle it.

Well I'm a bit shocked by the reaction from Flippa support.
They are not addressing the fact that the buyer is refusing to confirm his real name and instead has insulted me and told me never to contact him again.
Additionally, he has taken down the entire website which is rapidly ruining all the SEO I did for it !
Flippa support jumped in on the private message thread and has instructed both the buyer and myself to work things out basically.
So I'm feeling that Flippa is forcing me to refund someone who has proven themselves both abusive and untrustworthy instead of asking them to merely confirm they are who thy claim to be.
    Wow.

Luckily you are sitting on the longer lever. As Paypal does not give back money for digital goods the buyer can't really do anything if you don't give the money back.

You have delivered the goods so it should not be a problem.

Technically the only risk that you have is that he might call his credit card company and reverse the payment. If he used a debit card or his PayPal balance: too bad, he has no recourse.

This is in no way any advice, legal or financial. This is just for entertainment purposes.

I'm very sorry to hear this is happening to you. I have dealt with the exact same situation on eBay many times and the best thing you can do at this point is provide a refund and hope for the best especially if your payment is through paypal. In the end of he is a nasty scammer then well he's going to scam you either way.

    Best of luck

Btw this advice is based on my situation, I can't guarantee it's your best choice.

Don't give him his money back. Of course it's your business to know his name - if you have a business you would need an invoice for the sale, anyway.

Ignore Flippa support, they are usually terrible as you've seen here.

Also, in future, avoid selling a site to someone without asking them questions in advance to ensure they are legitimate. Any serious buyer will give you their name. It might be tempting to make a "quick" sale with little/no communication, but it never ends well and wastes a lot of time post sale dealing with a stupid buyer/Flippa/Paypal...

I certainly would NOT refund him unless the domain name was back in your account first. Keep all your communication with him in case he files a paypal dispute and then offer Paypal screenshots of him purchasing the flippa listing and all communications afterwards if you escalate it to a claim, and mention that it is a "digital product" in the claim.

Wow, I am panting hard I am so stunned and baffled by Flippa support right now.
After I posted this thread, the buyer continued to harass me.
Flippa encouraged me to refund him and told me (I kid you not) that Flippa's advice was to refund them WITHOUT knowing their actual name.

He took down the entire website and instead left up a zip file of all important website contents for anyone to download.
I contacted Flippa support that let them know that I wouldn't refund him after removing the website.
Flippa support replied that they 'understood'.
Fast forward and I started getting emails from Paypal that the buyer showed them he had returned the domain.
I called paypal and they said I was in the right and to ignore his harassment and perhaps call the police.

I let Flippa know this update and they replied that the user couldn't me further on Flippa.

      That made me feel good.

Well I just had the shock of my life on Flippa.

      Support has suspended me !

Why ? Because they said I didn't reply to this insane buyer whom they had TOLD me wasn't able to contact me further.

I immediately contacted support and reminded them that they already knew that this buyer ruined the website by removing it and also that they had told me he COULDN'T contact me.

They replied in the most vexing fashion.
A month ago I had another buyer who pretended return a name to me.
This buyer then did a chargeback. Paypal just decided in his favor 2 days ago.
So this other scumball has my money and my name.

So Flippa support actually had the nerve to bring this up as a reason for keeping my suspension.

I feel like I am in some insane alternate universe.

Again, none of Flippa's terms cover this suspension.

If anyone has advice I would greatly appreciate it !

I have now had two replies from support since posting this. They are refusing to budge.
I have offered a very generous partial refund since my site has been down for 10 days.
Support has removed suspension so that's good at least.

Typically flippa person. Like this place is crawling with creeps. Maybe they can change their name. Yeah, to scammmrz dot com. Site point was a great company ages ago. I have not bought any sites in over a year. Well, there are many reasons. Basically, we need another place to buy and sell domain names.

So a very troubling update. Flippa support kept asking me to offer some sort of refund.
Since the buyer completely removed my website and was redirecting the website to a static spam page, I took 80 dollars off the total refund.
The buyer accepted it after a lot of back and forth.
I refunded him on the promise that he would 'instantly' push my domain back to me.
Flippa support really coached me on and asked me to do this.
Well I refunded him and NO domain returned.
I have sent him multiple PMs and they've all been ignored.
So 24 hours later and I have no money and no name returned.
    Very disgusted.

The buyer is holding my 500 dollars and my domain/website hostage.
Flippa did at least permanently ban him for this.

    One more update.
Paypal stepped in and helped me finally. Got my name back.
But I see that the insane buyer tried to create a username on Flippa that is MY username spelled backwards!
    (that also got suspended)
PM for info so you call all avoid this freak online)
