Hello fellow Warriors,

I have a quick question...

I am trying to find a good way to get the most visitors to subscribers ratio. (hoping around 50%)

These are the 2 methods I am torn between choosing.

1. Building a blog and inputting all my content and then using a membership script to lock all content. I will allow around 250-500 words that they are able to read but if they want to read any further they will need to become a free member. This will then automatically add their email to my list.

2. Build a simple 3 page content squeeze page. This is where the visitor reads around 300 words on the first page, 300 words on the second and then 400-500 words on the 3rd page. Every page will have them click a link to go the the next page. Then on the 3rd page it will have a link that says to get more info you can subscribe for free at ...

Both of these have been tested and are considered great ways to get opt-ins. I just have the question of which way produces the "more responsive" list. I know I can do both but for now I want insight on to what the positives and negatives are of each one.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

    Hey Chdduncan,
They are great tips to get opt-ins. But you have to make your content keep valuable, don't make readers annoyed and bored. Make sure you add some words that make curious in the end of your content. It will increase your readers to be converted into subscribers.

I dislike these, and believe that they perform badly, overall. I have no evidence to offer you of this assertion: it's personal impression and opinion only.

I like these and believe that they perform well, overall. I would have (just) an email address opt-in-form right there, though, not refer them to another page/site to sign up.

Yes indeed ... this is the key question. The important mistake to avoid (which so many people make) is monitoring just the number of people who opt in to each and making a decision just on that basis.

Whenever I've split-tested opt-in pages (and I've done that a lot) the results have reinforced to me, over and over again, that "the biggest list" and "the list that produces the most income" are two different things, and that there are reasons for that (which it took me a long time to understand).

Ultimately, only your own testing in your own business can tell you what you need to know, here. But I'm guessing the second of your two options is going to be better than first, and by a big margin, in terms of the responsiveness of the list. Good luck!

I'd advise you not to lock all of your content, as I think it will annoy more people than it converts. And unless you're transparent about what will happen in this "free membership", you'll lose responsiveness as people who joined to read your content start getting promotions by email. If you decide to go the content locker route, leave some of your very best stuff free-for-all, so people can see the quality of your content.

I've also had good results from the multi-stage opt-in. Here's a perfect place to use a two step confirmed opt-in process.

As Alexa said, put your email address only opt-in form at the end of your third content page. When someone uses the form, replace the usual "check your email and confirm" drivel with a benefit packed description of what they get as a member (you can call it a membership even if the only component is your email list). Finish with an offer for a free download (your opt-in freebie) by clicking the confirm link to verify the email address is working.

On the success (confirmation) page, remind them of what a great decision they just made. Give them a link to get the download. Finish with a sneak peek at what's coming up (teasers). Put the same kind of thing in the success email.

Now you have them primed, and the rest is up to you...
