Is this the rudest unsubscribe email ever?

Hi everyone,

Don't you just hate it when people take you unsubcribing in a bad way? I mean a pet peev of mine is when you unsubscribe and the page it takes you to states you have now been blacklisted and cannot sign up to this list again.

Why? If I unsubscribe today I might sign up again if I come across a good squeezepage of yours or an affiliate directs me to your site - what exactly do you get from blacklisting anyone who unsubscribes apart from shooting yourself in the foot and being able to think you 'got one up' on the person who dared unsubscribe?

But this one takes the cake, I just unsubscribed to a warriors email list as they have been peddling crap to me and I wanted off, anyway about 10 minutes later I get an email from their yahoo email address (not the one used in the autoresponder so I am guessing they actually took the time to personally write this to me) saying this:

"Thanks for unsubscribing to my email list. I'll be sure to unsubscribe to yours."

I removed his name from that as he is a warrior - but what do you think, is that the most pointless, business-destroying, petty unsubscribe email you've ever seen or can you top that?

Let me know any bad experiences you've had unsubscribing from people's lists or just the rudest emails you've had from people who are supposed to be building a business but look they just haven't gotten out of the playground yet!

You say this is from a Warrior?

Well you got the 'W' right...

Never had one like that - though I do fill in the questionairre as to why I'm unsubscribing.

Strangely, most of them are for peddling crap.

I'm starting to see a lot more of this. They actually try and Upsell, Cross sell, downsell, when you opt out. I opted out of a WF member yesterday and I couldn't get out of his friggin site. He threw everything at me, what an a$$

When I thought I was out, he threw an Exit popout at me

The sad thing is that he has a good product, he's well respected here but he acts like an Infomercial.

I lost a lot of respect for him after this.

Some people are not professional enough to see that it's not personal when someone unsubscribes. Their list is not for everyone.

Steve, there are all kinds in this world.

I have learned to accept that and just move on.

My gut tells me that this person has very little success, if any at all.

Wow, that's... rude. Unscribing is just one of the things that
will happen... no point getting all nitpicky about it.

Wow..thats rude. I hope whoever it is is reading this thread.

The number 1 thing to remember in business, whether its online or offline and regardless of industry/niche ..is customer service!!

Treat customer like gold and ROI will be greater than the effort to provide excellent customer service.

Thanks everyone - yeh I don't think person really has the right attitude, they seem to think that is the end of our 'relationship' - when in fact I could buy something from him or join another of his lists anytime in the future! (or would have )

The best example I have seen of taking advantage of a 'negative' action like someone unsubcribing etc is when I asked for a refund off someone in the IM niche, and they sent me a lovely email saying thank you for trying it out and sorry it wasn't for me - and directed me to another product they thought I might like through a redirect using their affiliate link.

It was brilliant move, I went and purchased that other product which was more suitable - they got a commission, I got what I wanted - everyone was happy!

I agree, customer service is important DesignFuschion and people who do it well really stand out!

    1) You didn't lose anything. You don't want to make any business with such a person, do you?

    2) The simple fact that someone joins this forum doesn't tell you anything about his "qualities". Unfortunately being a Warrior doesn't mean too much for some people. They don't learn anything anyway. From the other side of the "fence", here is an unsubscribe request received last year from a "warrior": "Remove me from your database or else I will report this as a spam to my isp also."

    3) Move on or otherwise you'll lose something very precious: your time.

That reminds me of the time I was opting-in to a list to get a free report I was interested in. Of course, after I put my name and email address in I was taken to a page where the person tried to sell me something. That's cool, that's just business and it never offends me. I didn't want what the person was trying to sell, though, so I scrolled down to find the "no thanks" link. I can't remember exactly what the link said, but it was something along the lines of "No thanks, I prefer to stay ignorant."

I won't repeat my instant verbal response to that, but needless to say the person will never get my business. Insults? Really? What could possibly make anyone think that would work?

I have to chuckle at the unsubscribe message that says I'll be blacklisted forever and ever if I dare to unsubscribe. Those are the marketers I make a point to not purchase from in the future. I have no idea how successful that tactic is, but I find it distasteful and my knee jerk reaction is to avoid those types like the plague.

Hmmm...I wonder if I'm the only one?

  • Unsubscribes are a fantastic opportunity, if you're prepared to see it that way.

Make sure your unsubscribe page does the following:

    1. Politely confirms that the user has been removed from the list.

    2. Invites them to click to subscribe again, in case they did it in error.

    3. Offers them other subscriptions (if you have multiple lists) that might be more "up their alley" with a soft pitch.

    4. Presents them with a feedback form, so they can tell you whey they've unsubscribed, or contact you in some other way.

    5. Gives them a link to a page where you offer your newsletter in archive on the Web, if they don't want to receive it via email.

    6. Offers them your blog RSS feed -- a different way of hearing from you regularly.

But never, ever take it personally, or ban someone for unsubscribing. Cutting off your nose to spite your face, as they say...

I usually unsubscribe because of the frequency (or I should say over frequency) of sales pitches, Sometimes I am tempted to email them back, asking if they are doing so well in some program they have emailed me about, why are they pushing another one?

I think everyone has a right to unsubscribe. It's not a problem. I had one subscriber unsubscribe the other day from my list. The funny thing is, that the newletter that they clicked the unsubscribe link, just basically told them that I was giving them a free lifetime membership to my new link building system, which is now going to be a monthly subscription site.

Something of value for free, and they didn't want it. Odd, but each to their own. There loss I say.

As mentioned above. Your products, services and information doesn't suite everyone.

Ha ha.. no I've unsubscribed a lot and never received any hate mail. One well-known marketer did comment in the follow-up email that it might be unwise to unsubscribe because it is very important to stay current and one of his next emails might contain the essential nugget of info that I needed to succeed (even though none of the last 18 months worth had).

It made me chuckle because this person also talked a lot about productivity and staying focused on taking action and the interest in being sure I was kept abreast of the latest seemed a little transparent to me.

    Actually, that's pretty tame.

I used to publish an outdoors newsletter (fishing tips, etc.), and one guy kept signing up and then unsubscribing. Finally, he wrote to the service email:

"I've tried to unsubscribe from this [deleted] list a zillion times. Now you unsubscribe me immediately and then go [deleted] yourself!"

I gave him half of what he asked for, simply moving him to the 'do not mail' section of the database. The next time he tried to sign up, he got a message that simply said, "I'm sorry, but someone using this email address has asked that they not be mailed again and we honor those requests. If you think this is an error, you can email us at ... or try signing up using a different email address."

    Never heard from him again...

    That's pretty scary stuff.

I currently subscibe to only a couple of people.

Back in the day though, I must have suscribed to a list that I now don't want to be on anymore, sounds pretty simple - just unsubscribe. Well everytime I try to (I've given up now) I get an error message or the page won't load lol. It's not like it was just a one off, I basically cannot unsubscribe so no nasty unsubscribe comment to worry about here

It's actually kind of amusing. Shows how unprofessional he really is. As to unsubscribing in general, I have a new, free Adsense course and I got one unsubscribe BEFORE they got the welcome email!! It happens, you should not sweat it. I don't have lots of members on my lists, now around 3K, but if I agonized over every snipe, every rude comment, every unsubscribe, I would never get anything done. Also, dwelling on these things is a morale buster, something that can seriously affect productivity.

Lokimotion - no I didn't want to dwell on it so I just reported him to his autoresponder company and moved on. I don't have an IM list so he can't be on it, if he is actually on any of my other niche lists then I'll eat my hat

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Can't you see how childish that is? If you're on a marketer's list and all they are doing is sending you crap, it's your duty to unsubscribe (and tell them why if you can). You are doing the marketer a favor. If he has any sense, he'll see that he's getting lots of unsubscribes and start adding two and two together and realise that he's making mistakes.

To glibly reply that "you unsubscribed from me, so I'll unsubscribe from you" is playground talk.

Precisely. In fact, I'd put cold hard cash on the fact that you were probably only one of 50 or less of his subscribers.

        Why?

Because anyone with a substantial list/successful biz won't have the time to personally write shitty emails like that and get so personally defensive over a single unsubscribe...unless they are SO succeful that they can afford to pay a clerk to send hate mail to all their "anti buyers"...but I somehow doubt it ;-)

Classic newbie signs, but not typical signs of someone with business sense, newbie or not.
