I think you are overcomplicating things.

Just make sure it's memorable, catchy & unique. There's no need to fill domain name with keywords. And long domain names are also bad since when people want to return they have already forgotten it.

And oh, if possible, stick with .com

I agree! Thinking of a memorable domain name is very important but you really don't want to over think things, think of a name and get building your site!

Memorable is important, "SEO-able" is not as much. Search engines are a lot smarter now-days.

When thinking of domain names I use Instant Domain Search and just start typing in anything I can think of, sort of like a brainstorming session. I keep track of the domains that are available and then choose the best one from the list I create. Easy as that!

It is highly competitive online now so, in my opinion, you can't afford to have a substandard domain. I would go with as short, as memorable and as relative as you can get. For example, a couple of my drum domains are drumtips.com and drumchat.com. I think it is worth paying the money up front to have a competitive domain. As long as you follow it up with valuable content, people will remember it and/or bookmark it and be back to visit again.

Also, make sure the domain name you choose has at least one relative keyword in it. So, for example, if you're in the business of selling dog toys, don't use animalproducts.com, use a domain name with the word "dog" in it.

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

    Hi

You can go about it a number of different ways..

There is though one easy formula you can use.

Whatever service you offer whether it's design, writing, building websites or any other you simply put your initials in front of that service.

    tsdesign.com - tsblogbuilder.com - tsfreelance.com

I like the tsdesign.com, but a lot the 2 letter combos are already taken, U may get lucky with yours if U give it a try. Any of them though would be really good.

Think anything along these lines would be simple and pretty easy to remember and by using your initials you acquire some form of legal protection from a corporate named company that may at some point claim they have rights to the domain name.

Don't worry about SEO related name, leave that for the blackhatters with no iota of common sense.

Pick a short powerful name maybe YapDesign, YapWebDesign e.t.c

I just culled that from your username, lol.

I respectfully disagree. Simply do your own internet searches and you'll have your answer. Even with the Google algo changes over the last few years, it is still better to have the keyword in your domain name then not, if possible. Is it absolutely necessary? Of course not. But with an internet more congested than ever before, why make it harder for yourself.

And Google is not the only search engine out there. Bing often still rates websites better when it has the keyword in the domain name in most cases and even with Google, most of my important sites are still coming up first because I have the phrase in the domain name.

      I agree!

But try to make the name have good connotations. When I think of Yap for example, I think of my neighbour's horrible dog with small dog syndrome.

I think alliteration and rhyme are great tools for brand names, although may not necessarily work well together. Often the simplest ideas and the best. Aim for pronounceable. Don't try and overcomplicate it. E.g. looking up mythological gods to find one that might be alright (I used to do that!)

It has to be something catchy- to draw people's attentions, unique-make sure that people won't mistake it for something else, and make sure that, whatever name you choose, people will instantly know what your site wants to advertise.

Not the case when Amazon and Google appeared and they are doing OK :-)

Be clear about your niche or target market. Select a domain name this is memorable, easy to spell and brandable.

Look for domains for sale about your niche and see which domains are the most expensive ones. Try to imitate their style somehow.

Always remember to keep it short and simple and get a .com, as much as possible. Do not worry too much about getting the SEO-able factor. Stick to something that is easy to remember and is, at the same time, something that will be a good representation of what you do best in your business.

No matter what you name your domain, 99% is that people will not remember it... Just don't make it stupid, and trigger laugh and joke!

Do not use keywords (not necessarily), put a main keyword into Blog/Website title.

And of course, no matter what, use .com!

    Hope it helps

If it's your service and you aren't a branded company, just use your own name.

You're probably not going to rank very high in Google anyway, and most of your initial clients will come from your own marketing efforts.
