HI,

I would like to do the wp upgrade from 2.2 to 2.7.

Anyone had done this? It is difficult?

How to keep all posts intact?

Rdgs,

Patrick

I highly recommend using the Wordpress Automatic Upgrade plugin -

WordPress › Wordpress Automatic upgrade WordPress Plugins

I've used it tons of times and never had a problem.

As of something like 2.6 upgrading is built into Wordpress itself so once you get there you should have even less problems.

Good luck and feel free to get in touch if you have any problems, I'm happy to help.

    Cheers,

    Andy

I haven't made quite that large a jump in one go, but I do have one tip. Before you upgrade, go in and do a manual backup of your databases so you'll have them just in case something goes wrong.

Does your host have cPanel/Fantastico? If so, it should be relatively painless. If you log into your cPanel and open Fantastico it'll walk you through the process.

But don't forget to do the backup first.

    Like MizzCindy said

    1. backup your databas (+ftp files)

    2. ftp wordpress 2.7

    3. upgrade (it'll let you know it'll modify your db structure)

This should be everything, I didn't have any problem with it

I have someone I hired to do the upgrades because you really need to do one version at a time. She only charged $50 to go from 2.3 to 2.7 and fix the theme that didn't work in 2.7 anymore. PM if you want her contact info.

It is really easy, and I recommend doing it manually.

    Here are the detailed instructions:
    codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended

As stated above, back up your db and all ftp files. Make sure your backups look good.

Take it one step at a time, and you'll be fine.

Backup everything before you upgrade, not just the database.. Use your control panel for hosting to make a "FULL SERVER BACKUP" ...

Once done then you can proceed with the upgrade to v2.7

    * Do NOT use any auto update - this is a high security risk you are taking if you do.
    * Disable your theme and plugins.
    * Upload all the files by ftp for v2.7 (no need to upload the plugin / theme folders)
    * Open your browser to the blog and it will redirect to update your database.
    * When finished you then can login and reset your theme / plugins

It is actually simple and should take less than 15 minutes... There may be issues with your theme and plugins so only activate one at a time and check your site each time you activate..

Why do you consider the auto update to be a security risk James?

Because you are allowing a third party server to be connected to your server and database. This is a very high security risk and before anyone says "wordpress.org" can't be hacked think again, it has already happened...

I would never allow a third party server connect to mine.. I run 2.7 on some sites but I ripped the entire auto update coding and files out of the blog.

This is also a good time to update any plugins, and nuke any that you aren't using.

Inactive plugins can still be a security risk.

  • You could always read the instructions provided by the source:

    Upgrading WordPress Extended WordPress Codex

Turning OFF your plug ins is a big deal. And your template may or may not be compatible and many of your existing plugins if not updated may not work.

Thanks for all suggestions. I have to follow one method thoroughly. So either manually or auto plugin method.
