What is an e-mail list worth?

I found an excel sheet with 10k e-mail addresses on my computer. The list also includes the customer name and products previously bought. I don't plan to use it since I don't want to spam.

I am very curious though what such a list would be worth in the hands of a skillful spammer?

So are you asking "skillful spammers" here on the Warrior Forum how much they would pay you for your list?

I have no idea what the list is worth but I will share a couple of things.

You can very easily find email lists for sale on eBay, at Fiverr, or just by Googling the right terms. I've seen lists of several million email addresses selling for less than $25.

I would suggest just deleting the list as it is only "trouble waiting to happen" for anyone that tried to use it. The people on the list have not opted in to receive emails from whomever might end up with the list. Therefore, why try to look for any value in it? Just destroy it.

Im not looking for buyers or to use the list. I don't want to spam or for these customers to be spammed, just being curious.

One other question to follow up: What is an e-mail address worth when the user has opted in to your list and has somewhat of an interest in what you are offering? I know that this is probably like asking something along the lines of "What is a car worth?" but I am wondering what the ballpark is.

I can't decide whether to go "higher" or "lower", on this one. I think on a good day, in an expansive sort of mood, my estimate might be as high as $0.30, to a spammer (because a spammer's exactly the type of person who'll probably over-value it?) - so I say "higher".

Here's the point, Busto: the value of a list is in the relationship between the subscribers and the list-owner. It's about the extent to which they trust you and are, accordingly, willing to take out their credit-cards when you recommend something. It's all a function of who you are, from their perspective. If you're not the person to whose list those people opted in, that relationship doesn't even exist. That's why no autoresponder company will allow you to import and use such a list to send out email. And it's also why you shouldn't do that on your own, using self-hosted autoresponder software, because some of the recipients will hit the "spam" button in their email client software, and if enough of them do so, it's your own hosting, domain-registration and maybe even internet connection that you're putting in jeopardy.

And that's without even thinking about what the open-rate will be, how many other people those people have been spammed by, and so on and so forth.

I recognize, of course, that it was never your intention to do this anyway.

        Ah, now, that's a whole different ball-game.

Yup ... it's exactly like "What is a car worth".

In this instance, it depends on the continuity-process and the subscriber expectations and the traffic demographics. It may also depend on some other stuff like the niche, whether they're buyers or just opting in to download a freebie, and so on, too. But the continuity-process and the subscriber expectations (which the marketer can set, if s/he knows how) are the big ones that determine the potential value of the list.

You're not a spammer, but you want to sell them to a spammer  That makes you a spammer dude

Delete that list, you have no business selling other peoples email without their consent.

Im not suprised that you do not beleive me. I don't beleive anyone either in this industry. If someone is not lying they at least have some sort of ulterior motive for wrinting. In fact, are you posting only to express your opinion or do you also post to 'spam' the forum with the offer in your signature?

              The irony of it!!

You started off the thread because you've somehow "found" a list of 10,000 email addresses, and you were wondering "what such a list would be worth in the hands of a skillful spammer" (your words), and now you're suggesting that Alex is a spammer?!

You got me, I am just spamming this thread to get eyes on my sig...stop it dude, everybody knows I hate spam. We've seen many threads like this, and I wouldn't be surprised if you started this thread, just to get offers. You are asking a question, and I replied.

People don't get curious about selling an email list, unless they plan on selling an email list. I'm not trying to be an ass, but what you are attempting to do is not cool.

Are you proposing that Alex makes his income solely on promoting his signature on WF? What everyone is trying to say is that basically spamming is looked down upon on here (WF) Anyone that asks anything spam related is usually shown the door. If you "found" that list of emails and the title of this thread is "how much it's worth" you are insulting our intelligence if you think we can't read between the lines.

As with anything else, an email list is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. What people will be willing to pay will be determined by the amount of money they will be able to make from that email list.

I would try and find out who you got the list from and how old it is. There could be some value there, but only if you knew who's list it was and if you could use their name in any emails you would send them. Otherwise get rid of it.
