Nitty Gritty Discussion - VPS, Dedicated, colocated and owned servers

I've been off the forum a while, and I came back to find a lot of the same questions being asked...

So I thought let's just DEFINE this stuff cleanly in one place.

VPS
Dedicated
Colocated
Owned servers

VPS - You have a "virtual" Private Server. This means your server doesn't answer to others, but it is a virtual (software only) machine on a bigger, better hardware machine. The guy next to you can't change your services, but can overwhelm the CPU or the RAM of the 'big' computer that hosts your Virtual Pirvate server. This means, you are part of a larger computer, and you are "logically" (i.e. software only) divided off to a separate server. If someone does something stupid and breaks the hardare leve, you're down.

Dedicated - Unlike a VPS, you are on your own hardware. No one else should be using any part of your harward resources, so no one should be able to accidentally bring your server down. You probably have either complete or at least near complete control of your server. (and if you need support, you probably have to pay extra for anything serious) You effectively "rent" an entire computer. You are admin/root on this computer, but if you break it, you're going to pay to get it fixed.

Colocation - You OWN the server, you rent space in a data center, within reason you are allowed to do anything with your server, because, you own it. You bought a computer and placed it in my data center... As long as it doesn't hurt the other computers in my data center, I really don't care much what you do with it. (as long as it is legal)

Owned server - Kind of like the dedicated or colocation scenario, but the server sits someplace where you are paying the electric bill, and the internet access charges, etc. Basically, you are responsible for the server hardware, the internet connection, and basically everything else.

The advantage of the last, is you have the most control. The advantage of the first, is you have the least expense.

I know someone brought all this up somewhere in the past, but I didn't find them all in one place, so I thought I should sum them up for everyone.

    Hi Scott

There are several types of VPS. The three main ones are OpenVZ, Xen and KVM. Your definition of VPS fits with the cheapest of the three VPS I mentioned - OpenVZ. If you go for Xen or KVM, your neighbor wont affect you in anyway and what you are assigned is allocated only to you. Frankly I think it takes care of most high traffic website's needs and Dedicated servers are for those who can afford it.
