Download Link Protection

Fellow Warriors,

I have a couple of my own digital products set up for sale on my website. I need to know if anyone knows how to protect the download link from those that are able to find it thru the search engines and from those that make a purchase and feel like they can get a refund on the product and then go to the link directly. Currently I am sending my buyers to the thank you page that contains the download link after they make payment via PayPal. My website is not a wordpress site, it is html. Anyone out there know what I can do?

    1. This hides page from search engines but anybody who knows url, can access it.
    Place under <head> tag.
    Code:
    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">
    2. You could code simple members area with PHP. After payment is processed at paypal, postback script creates account to database with random password, PayPal email as username and make script to email details to PayPal email.

And members area could include link to download.

    3. Use software like aMember that got all this already.

This will provide what you're looking to do:

DLGuard - Download page protector, create expiring download links

    Hope this helps.

I second DLGuard. Plus Sam gives excellent customer support too - along with simple documentation about how to set everything up. If you're with Hostgator, setting it up will be incredibly easy.

      Hi,

there are several ways.. for instance, this simple script will redirect spying eyes back to your home page:

      <HEAD><META http-EQUIV="refresh" content="0;URL=http://www.yourwebsite.com"></HEAD>

Paste it into the HEAD of your page and replace the url above with yours.

Dlguard hands down is one of the best.

      Cheers

    hi, Wesawu...
if you want it to be completely secure, you can pay monthly fee for the service... :>
for example at digital product delivery (DPD).. i think the url is getdpd(dot)com...

i used it for couple of years, and never have problem with them :>

if i'm not wrong, it's $10/month for 20 products (i'm not affiliate to the site though :>)

You can password protect the folder from your hosting control panel, look for password protect and choose the folder where all your files there and forward the login username and password to your all buyers by using an autoresponder automated delivery with integration to your merchant account such as paypal.

This is the best way to prevent any buyer ask for a refund and then download your product directly from the download page.

There is no use if you use the nofollow, noindex tags in the header of the download page, because the buyer who are bad, they will usually bookmark your download page and be accessed from it all the time after they got the refund.

    Hope this helps.

Just an observation, Amy, and apologies indeed if it's an unwelcome one, but there's limited value in protecting the download link without also protecting the product. Most "mass piracy" happens when people upload such products to torrent/black-hat/file-sharing sites, and no amount of protecting the download link itself will necessarily prevent that from happening.

One solution (not a 100% solution, but a very good one, in practice), is to handle the product-delivery through e-Junkie, which will (at no extra cost) stamp the purchaser's transaction details, including their name, on each page of the PDF before they download it. Not an "unbreakable" system for a really determined thief, perhaps, but a huge deterrent to people from uploading it anywhere they shouldn't. It can be the difference between security and having illicit downloads widely available.

I have used e-Junkie with success in the past. They have some great features that work well and one used to be able to try out the service for X number of days before paying for it.

e-Junkie also has a marketplace, if you desire to use it, so you can make additional sales on their "marketing dime."

Lexy is right, and I think most product owners see their products pirated after the sale is more so than by hackers trying to dig into your code to find access. It's unfortunate, but not a lot different than in the physical world where people share books and other things all the time.

        The very best to you,

        Steve

That is true, but is often kind of besides the point.

A vendor should be more concerned about piracy by people who might have otherwise bought, than "mass piracy".

The former group, often will go via a download link, or download page, if they can find it directly through search engines, or access a link to such a page after it is posted on a forum (and they find the forum through search engines).

Thanks Alexa, I actually signed up for e-junkie yesterday and the process was very simple, less than 15 minutes from signup to uploading product. The only thing I didn't like was that the "buy now" button provided by e-junkie was just horrible. I had to make my own button and add it to the code. Not complaining, at all. e-junkie solved my problem.

          Hey amy,

just a quick note regard protecting your digital downloads. Soon you will find out that there's no REAL solution to fight illegal file sharing.

Selling a downloadable product has its drawbacks. Obviously people can clone it and sell it at a cheaper price. Of course they never took the time to create it.

However if you password protect it (if its a PDF) then that should make the less skillful people find it harder to clone as their own.

However there are ways to get around it as many scammers and spammers prove everyday.

You just need to ensure that you brand your product well, use references back to articles on your own website and keep it current with yearly updates.

This is the best way to handle scammers - full brand.

Amy.... I've heard some good things about WP File Lock. It's a WP plugin that not only secures your files but also works in conjunction with your autoresponder to automatically add your buyers to a 'buyers list'.

Used to be a free plugin but looks like it's a paid one now.

Yes, DL Guard is an pretty good product. Sam and team are great for support too! But if you are looking for something that can grow as you grow, I suggested you look into aMember Pro. This thing does way more than just protect a download.
