The Realization That I Suck at IM

This is a pseudo-rant inspired by my current level of frustration.

I just realized that I have just spent the last 4.5 hours trying to figure out how to start building an email list. It shouldn't be hard, I've done it before. I've had an Aweber account before. But now, I don't know if I need a squeeze page, sales funnel or whatever. It's all been forgotten because I have no interest in any of this stuff.

My interest is in developing my products and services, not trying to figure out how to make the font a little smaller on my WordPress site.

I have a fully functional website that is getting consistent traffic. That website is the only one of several sites that I currently have online that is getting decent traffic. The site already looks horrible and the thought of adding a squeeze page or opt in box is making me lose sleep. Like fashion, I have no eye for web design.

I'm not good at any of this because I have no interest in any of it. I understand I have to know how to do it to be successful online, but I have no interest or desire to work on my websites.

Again, my passion is the products that I have developed.

Here's what I've realized... I've spent most of my life a a professional driver. Driving cars, trucks, buses, anything with rubber wheels. I'm an excellent driver, I love the work. But I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to change the oil in any of the vehicles I drove. I had no interest or desire to learn.

So I've realized that it's time for me to delegate. Outsource. I've read that in more than few articles. Spend your time on the things you are good at, and delegate (outsource) the rest.

I'm all for this. But I have limited funds right now. I would like to start generating some income from my active site, and invest that money into hiring others to build my online empire.

So, in the meantime, I'm on my own again. Trying to figure out how to change the oil on my WordPress site.

My site is getting decent traffic, with ZERO promotion (see image below). These are active users who are engaging with my content. I would like to start capturing them to an email list.

In addition to the free content on the site, I have created a custom product. I have already created a Fiverr gig for that product. I can also sell variations of the product directly on the site, with special offers to the email list.

So, my sincerest thanks if you are still with me on this rant (I feel a little better already).

I have two questions:

1) Is there a step-by-step guide for setting up an email list (for the frustrated non-mechanic types)?

2) What is the best way to integrate my Fiverr gig onto the site (or is it even necessary)?

Why not try partnering with someone who can take care of the marketing and sales funnels while you create the products? Get an agreement together, split the proceeds, you're both happy. And you don't have to worry about creating squeeze pages...

Ok, I will try my best to answer:

    1) To set up a list, you need:

    i) a series of useful messages on your niche that you can send out to your list automatically in periodic intervals or manually as a broadcast

ii) something useful to "entice" your visitors to opt into your list - eg, an ebook, a video, an audio book, etc

iii) a squeeze page (or lead capture page) for visitors to submit their email (and/or name) which will be captured by your autoresponder service

iv) an autoreponder or email management service to manage the lists

    v) a sales page to promote your list

    2) You an offer your gig in your autoresponder messages or create a section on you site.

Hope this helps. If you need further help, please PM me

I hear ya! I have the same exact problem... I was super into writing all of my eBooks, creating my website, and setting everything up... However, when it comes to actuall taking the "next step" and actually trying to MAKE MONEY....well, I find myself forcing myself to try and keep myself interested in it.

Most autoresponder companies like MailChip, Aweber or GetReponse have tutorials for non-technical people which are really easy to understand. I'd start there. Here's an example from mailchimp.

Regarding the Fiverr gig I believe that the best way is to actually promote it on Fiverr itself since it would be easier. Fiverr already has customers looking to spend money (hopefully on a gig like yours) so I think it's best.

If you post the gig here maybe we could give you some better advice.

I totally understand what you are saying! I have spent way too much time in the passed trying to pretty things up when I could be out marketing instead. Your traffic is impressive, so just remember you only have to build the boring stuff once.

      Hey Dead Guy,

I don't know if you already mentioned this but what platform is your website built on. If you use Wordpress I have a couple of resources/tools you can use to make it pretty easy (step-by-step)

Since you're already familiar with Fiverr, why not just pay someone to set up the stuff that you don't want to do or don't know how to do? Once the work is done, just change all of your passwords and you're all set.

    Hey Dead Guy....

I would echo HamzaW's advice. Looks like you enjoy creating content and getting some traffic but shy away from the tech/conversion side of things. There are many marketers on WF who could convert your traffic into subscribers and/or customers (now you have a list of buyers). Partner up with someone like that.

Sounds like it would be a match made in internet heaven!

IMO everyone has to start off as a beginner. Not really a problem there, but some people expect to do well right off. Normally this is not the case and might cause people to give up. The good thing about being a true beginner is you are less afraid to make mistakes, in a way that can be an asset for creativeness. I remind myself that being a beginner simply proceeds mastery.

Have you tried plugins? There are many free optin plugins available. A free one that you might want to consider is Optin Crusher Plugin: Build an Optin Email List in WordPress | Daniel Watrous

If you have a little cash, I recommend Hybrid Connect. It will set up your squeeze pages, sidebar optin form, and light boxes with ease. You don't have to do anything manually except customize colors and fonts. Hybrid Connect: Most Advanced Mailing List Building Plugin for WP

I know what you mean,. I am sure we all have the same problem with certain aspects. Outsource what you can. I think a lot of it is attitude too. You go in thinking you are hating something, so it ends up taking longer to get it done, and so you hate it even more.
