Where to start with internet marketing?

Hi everyone!

This is my first post and I am glad to be a member of the forums. I belong to numerous business forums and just came across this one and it caught my eye. From an internet marketing standpoint, where do you start?

Do you find a product you can sell and then start driving traffic to it? How do you compete with other online competition? Where do you start and whats a good way to gain experience? I want to do something small so I can get the feel for it but I am lost on where to begin? Whats better selling information or selling products or both? I look forward to hearing back from the community.

I guess thats my question. Where do you begin to look for products/niches? Should I just study interesting markets and look for opportunity?

Choose a subject (product/service) that you have personal interest in, or is related to a personal interest you have. For example, I'm a runner, so even my personal website can generate income through:
      - Google AdSense - I earn money if people click away from my site
      - Affiliate Ads - Amazon.com books related to running, Commission Junction affiliates such as running shoes, clothing, travel
      - Links to related direct marketing (MLM) businesses I'm in such as nutritional supplements
      - I use PayPal to sell an eBook I wrote about how to start a running club
      My site is RunMarathonMan.com

There's alot of work and time involved in learning how to make money, so it's best to select a subject that you're willing to invest extra effort into.

Hoestly there are quite a few avenues you can travel down in internet marketing but you have to be the one to choose which path best fits your taste.

    -The Niche Information Site-

If you know alot about a particular subject then you can create a site (niche site) and write about that interest that you have and teach people how they can learn about your knowledge and then place ads on your site for them to click on.

You can direct them to a product that you've created in that niche or a product that an affliate is selling which you would get a cut of the final sell if they buy that product from another seller.

    -Affiliate Site-

This type of site is directly to sell the visitor on a product that you've created or another person has created and get them to go buy that product. As above you will get a cut of the final sell.

These are just a few ways you can make money online but the key to any of the methods you will come across is to drive internet traffic to your site. You can do that with two methods. Paid or free. Paid is faster shorter lived and cost money.

PPC (pay-per-click). You can create your own adsense ad to be advertised on other peoples sites, or google main search results page so that people that search your keywords will see your ad and visit your site. You pay Google per click (based on current competition for those keywords) and then they come and leave. Maybe they buy or just mostly leaven.

SEO (search engine optimization) this is a free, slower to gain traffic with, but will remain for quite some time method.

You arrange your website based on keywords. Keywords are the words that people type into Google when they are searching for something, ex: riding lawn mowers, wireless keyboards, etc. Trick is to find the keywords that are searched for the most by your targeted traffic and place them in a particular order on your website so that when they type those keywords into Google your site is listed on the first page of the Google search results. Now that is in a nutshell SEO because i would need a book to describe all the different variables that are needed in order to get your site on the first page of Google for your keywords. SEO in fact is an entire method to master within itself and is forever changing by Google.

No one person understands or knows the formula to how Google ranks pages in their search engine but many know the large number of variables that need to be included to better your ranking. Backlinks, Website Age, etc.

There you go everything you need to know in a nutshell without having to shell out hundreds of dollars on SEO or IM books.

The warrior forum is rich with advise if you know what you are looking for. Best advise would to be take what I gave you and start digging into each field that will lead you to another level that you will need to understand to learn the next level. Trust me the rabbit hole goes to china so start digging....best of luck !!!! IM me if you have any questions.

  • Start with a Target Market and work backwards from there. If you don't have an idea of who your Target Market is then you are not ready to start.

Thanks a ton! I have basic web design and SEO skills. How many hits have you got on selling your ebook on the running club?

To tell a little about myself I got my client www(dot)bluecrossah(dot)com on the front page of all major search engines for keywords "las vegas veterinarian" and "las vegas animal hospital", but my understanding is local keywords are easy compared to nation / world wide.

I understand the veterinary industry, but I enjoy the computer industry, ATV industry, and I guess sports / body work out.

To be honest I have so many ideas and I just want to pick one and test the water out. I am not scared to fail as I want to just get in there and get some experience.

After a product has been selected and you start pushing traffic towards it how long do you keep trying before you make a decision if its worth it or not? Results should come in how long?

My suggestion is to always start by looking at what is selling - you overcome 75% of the battle of making money online by first starting with something that is selling and then 1) Improving the marketing and 2) improving the product.

      Why?

Simply because there are less variables.

With a product that you know is already selling well you KNOW a few things...

      1. It has a market
      2. It is in demand AND people are already spending money on it (no guesswork)
      3. You can reverse-engineer what their ultimate motivation is in buying which can lead to additional product and marketing ideas...
      4. You have a website and marketing system on the site that is doing a good job of selling that product that works...trying to do this from scratch can be expensive and time consuming
      5. You can reverse engineer how they are getting traffic to their site - which keywords they are ranked for, who their top affiliates are, what sort of sales funnel they use, etc...

I don't know about you - but I'm all for starting with something I know is working and then enhancing that business by 1) Developing new products to target the same desired outcome 2) Sourcing products from better suppliers (non infoproducts), 3) Putting a better offer in front of them 4) Making more profit 5) Generating more free traffic, and so on...

Systems around this process have worked for many we have worked with. Hope it makes sense.

    Hi,

When I have an idea for a good niche, the first place I start is the Google Adwords External Keyword Tool. Plug in your keyword(s) and see what comes up in search. That will tell you what people are looking for. Look for a number between 1,000 and 20,000. That tells you there's enough search but not too much where you can't compete. If you pick something that has a search of 150,000,000 a month (for example) then you know there's going to be too much competition for that keyword. Not worth the frustration.

Okay, so now that you've found something with just the right demand. Go to your favorite friendly search engine (google) and do a search for your keyword. Type this into the search bar: allintitle:"your keyword" and hit enter. That will give you an idea of your real competition. Look for a fairly low number (4 figures) of sites that have your keyword. Check out the pagerank of the sites and if you have a ton of sites with PR of 3 or higher, forget it. It will be hard to crack. You want something easy for your first site. A good tool to use for this is the SEOQuake toolbar.

Then, look at the competition and see what they have. What kinds of content, products, etc. Just evaluate it based on your interest in the subject and whether or not you can do a better job of building the site and giving the visitors what they want.

The most important thing, imho, is to make sure there's enough demand and not too much competition. Otherwise, you'll be crying in frustration and despair before too long. It will take time to build but as long as there's a good demand/supply ratio and you keep building consistently, you should do all right.

    Hope that helps,

    Eunice
