No BANS - What to Do?

I bought a domain name and purchased BANS. I set it all up and ran into some problems. So I came to WF and read a lot of not so great reviews about how Google doesn't like BANS sites so I cancelled it. That wasn't my only reason. It was really hard to set up and the support was not so great, either.

Why didn't I do look it up on WF before I bought???? I can't tell you because I don't know why...I've done it for everything else!

Back to my issue....I was wondering what is the best way to go now. Do I go with a Webstore by Amazon? Blog with a phpbay plugin? Build a site and link to an affiliate program?

This is a great niche and I think it will do really well. I just need to figure out which way would suit me best.

It has to be simple so I can just set it and forget it. I want to concentrate on promotion and SEO. I appreciate your help...I really value warrior opinions, obviously. :-)

Thanks,

Eunice

I also got my start on the BANS bandwagon before Google didn't like them as much. My sites still bring in something like $2 or $3 here or there, but overall it was a really bad idea. But I was new too.

After that I started building niche blogs and haven't looked back. I also work on things like product creation.

So if you think you have a great niche I would consider building a site and referring people to products in that niche or create one yourself.

So should I just find an affiliate program with the products I want to sell and recommend those? Or go with phpbay? I am not really sure about that plugin. I just saw it as something people were recommending as an alternative to BANS.

I couldn't create a product in this particular niche. I am not that good with a needle and thread! lol

I've never tried BANS (it always looked a bit 'insubstantial' to me), so I've never seen phpbay as simply an alternative to it. Used in conjunction with unique and syndicated content (mostly syndicated) and the usual WordPress SEO modifications - the All-In-One SEO plugin, making efficient use of tags etc - I've had reasonably good results with phpbay on sites that I've pretty much left to take care of themselves.

I don't know if everyone's experiencing it, but for me, eBay affiliate income has picked up a bit in the last two or three months - nothing dramatic, but definitely noticeable - so I'm giving those sites a bit more attention again now. I think it might be down to people looking harder for bargains as a result of the recession. PHPbay and WordPress isn't the road to overnight wealth (if there is such a thing!), but I've got no complaints about it.

    Diana,
I'm like you in that i found the same kind of success in building substantial sites that incorporated phybay into it. The problem with BANS imo is that it left to much of a footprint and didn't look like it provided the user with much needed information that they may have been looking for with their own keyword research.

By building a quality site with good information, and throwing phpbay on it as well, you're leveraging how google views your site as a good/great information resource. That in itself allows you to get better clickthroughs because of your exposure.

my very first site was a BANS site too... it's an ebay boat site (i love boats). It was impossible to set up and very inflexible. I still get a lot of organic traffic but haven't made a dime. I also spend "0" time promoting it. Moving and re-doing the site is on my 'to do' list and I have also been looking at phpbay.

since it's linked to wordpress, I'm sure that it's much more google friendly and I have become pretty comfortable with wordpress over the last several months. I know there are free widgets that pull in ebay auction listings because I have one on my blog for that site.

I can recommend the PHPBay Pro plugin. It is very customizable and easy to use. Your Auction item URLs can also be SEO'd for better search engine results. I have a few sports sites running this plugin and have enjoyed pretty good success with them. There is also a "lite" version of the plugin so you can try before you buy.

Here's what I would do, but it may depend on the niche as to whether its a good option.

Setup Wordpress and then have a static page as your home page. On this page write a 'review' on a product (if your niche has one good product that you can promote). Write this review as though you were in the buyers shoes and write how the product really benefited you.

Then I would add another page using the phpbay script to promote products through Ebay. Then add a page where your blog posts will show up and have a blog. I know you said you wanted it to be hands free but if you just update that blog often enough it is going to benefit your SEO.

If you don't want to update it regularly there are plugins around that can make it easier with autoposting.

Then I would optimize it with some Adsense ads also.

As far as phpbay pro and phpbay lite - just use the lite version. It does the job just as good and its free.

    Good luck

I meant to mention that too - I own the pro version of phpbay, but because I originally intended to sell some of the sites I mentioned above, I used the lite version because I did not want to faff about with licensing issues when transferring to another owner. The results have been just as good, and I've never felt the need to whack the pro version on instead since deciding to keep them.

That's not necessary if you select your niche and keywords correctly. You'll get buying traffic with no need for posting. For example, one of my best earning EPN sites is a Blogger blog that hasn't had a new post since September 2008. Another is a static HTML site that hasn't been updated since 2007.

I would love to know more about how you set them up. I have read ebooks recently on choosing excellent keywords with good searches and very little competition and how to set up the sites for good SEO - the idea being these sites will rank very well, very quickly and will not need future updating.

I have tried this though - and yes I did use really good keyword phrases - and didn't really get the results that I was expecting. Perhaps its still too early but I have my doubts with only a few pages on the site.

I'm not saying I don't believe you, just saying that it didn't work for me and I have my doubts about my particular sites going anywhere.

Most of it is described in posts on the two blogs in my sig and the product review one is an example as well.

Basically it's finding long tail, buying keywords, building a site that have decent internal SEO, writing good, but not great, keyword oriented, content, and building links to it. From there, it's a numbers game. The more sites you build, the more links you build to them, the more traffic you'll get and the more money you'll make.

Not every site will do well. I have one site that's only had 7 visitors so far this year. Some others get traffic but not so much money. The idea is to keep building new sites and find those that do make you money.

The eBay niche store model is still great. I gave up on BANS long ago as well but I've been building my niche stores with phpBay Pro and I love it. It's fun and easy way to add passive income streams into your business. The more stores the better. Just remember to add content and make your stores people friendly. Don't just slap up stores with auctions and expect to make a lot money doing that. But anyway my vote is for phpBay Pro plugin and Wordpress.

Thanks, I will take a look at your blogs and see if you are doing anything different than how I set mine up.

So do you work on building backlinks to it? Where you say 'the moe sites you build the more links you build to them' so do you build more sites in the same niche linking back to the original one?

              Hello,

This is my first post and this topic interested me. This is what you do. Find a keyword phrase that has no competition or very little.

Next...the phrase must have a good amount of search volume. I usually don't go below 2,000 searches per month.

Then...make sure that phrase has products to sell on e-bay.
An example: the search phrase yamaha electric guitars has pretty low competition and high search count..great! Now head over to e-bay and type in yamaha electric guitars. Sweet! Great list of products. Log in to your e-bay affiliate account and generate the rss feed with the term "yamaha electric guitars" safe this code to a notepad.

Now, try to register the domain yamahaelectricguitars.com
Next step write a high quality unique optimized for "yamahaelectricguitars"

Finally, all you do is install wordpress with a clean seo optimized theme,
post that article, then right after the article post the rss feed from ebay.
The only thing you have to do after this is create a few backlinks. All I do is social book mark it, create a couple articles for directories and submit to a couple rss directories.

Doing this you should be able to rank on the first page of google. There is an example site I know of called yamahaelectricguitar I do not recommend putting adsense on your site however.

This person has been fluctuating from page 1 to page 2 for awhile now and he only has a couple links pointing to it...(; Hope this answered your question.

Confusion - my BANS store still works. Looks fine. So - no Bans? I actually found BANS easy to work with and set up. I modified to my heart's content and was doing okay with just letting it sit there. No so much lately.

I have used BANS in the past but now I'm building auto blogs with WP that combine ebay, amazon, youtube, articles, yahoo answers and a little original content to get them started. Alot of my sites will have "stores" that do the ebay portion.

I used to use phpbay lite but the outgoing links were somewhat of a footprint so I started using Wordbay which is free and much more flexible in my opinion. It has more features and hides the affiliate link to ebay as well.

I use reviewazon for the amazon portion of content, and then I sprinkle in some CPA banners and adsense on these sites as well. Just depends on the niche of how I ultimately set them up. Google likes them too. A couple of my sites have reached page rank of 3 in only 6 months. PM me if you'd like to see some example sites to model after.

I, too, highly recommend going with WordPress and an eBay plugin of your choice! There are several free ones available as well as paid eBay plugins.

They are very easy to get up and running, so you can build a bunch of them quickly in various niches to see which ones pan out.

Here's a tip...After you've built a few eBay blogs and made some sales, be sure to download your transaction data from EPN to see which products were sold. By doing this, you'll get some great ideas for other niches to build sites around. People who click thru your links don't always buy products in the niche your site is about.

      HTH,
      Tamara

I've a handful of bans sites. The ones that are still indexed have got one article each, and bring in a couple of quid a month. I've only had one deindexed, which at its peak was making $20 per day. It now makes $100 per month using totally organic traffic from Yahoo & Bing. So there is life after Google.

I'm like you, Mike. I have a really old BANS site that was deindexed by Google almost 2 years ago. It still gets traffic and it generates about $50 a month.

I don't touch the site, so I'm not complaining about money for nothing.

The fact Google don't like that old site hasn't stopped it making regular money. True, it would make more if Google did like it!

BANS in itself is only a tool and it's certainly possible to customize the sites to look unique and offer valuable content. I think part of the problem was that very few BANS users ever did.

I'm going to put the vote in for Wordpress + phpBay as well. I have three sites that rank well right now (2 Have #1 Google Ranking, 1 has #1 Yahoo Ranking). They are about 3 months old. All of them are themed to look like an e-commerce store. None of them are content heavy at ALL.

One site earned me $350 this month, one earned $100, and one earned $10.

I've put up 4 more that need to be seasoned and I've got a total of having 60 sites up by the end of the summer. (I currently do this full-time)

I think that the whole "build a content filled site" mantra is a bit over-played myself. It's backlinks and not content that determine your positioning. How many "real" ecommerce sites rank well and have little more than a 2-paragraph blurb about any particular product. That's proof enough for me that you don't need a 400-word article for each product in order to rank well. I currently invest my time at a 5-to-1 linkbuilding-to-content ratio.

I love BAN sites and Google loves mine, they are PHPbay Pro and make from 50-100 a month on auto pilot.

Funny thing is, I just slapped them up and the traffic come a few weeks later. Yahoo still has love for BAN sites.
