Hey guys,
This has been driving me nuts for a while now. I'm not a MAC user but if it's at least 50% less trouble than PC then I just may switch. For instance... I receive a zipped file from someone. This zipped file has bunch of images both for PC and MACOSX. I'm running on windows Vista. Now, whenever I try to unzip the file by right clicking on it, then hit EXTRACT ALL, the unzipping procedure is seet in motion. However, half way through it, I guess it recognizes that there are files with the same name (those are the mac files) and it thinks they are duplicates. In the end, the unzipped folder, which in this case should be 40 or so MB with hundreds of images is EMPTY. What is going on here? How do I extract/unzip a file that has copies of the files/images inside of it for both PC and MAC? Thank you very much in advance. Peter |

Since switching to Vista, I have had the same problems when someone sends me a zipped file and it has a folder with the same name within the zipped copy.
Once you click on the zipped file and it opens, just drag the internal files over to your desktop and they will show up there unzipped. |

to quote a previous poster "since switching to vista" I reinstalled the whole thing and sure enough on the second install it opened zip files really well. Before I tried that I was in contact with MS and received the following instructions of things to try. None of them worked for me, but they are worth trying.
Method 1: ====== 1. Click Start, type regedit.exe and press Enter. 2. Navigate to the following branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip 3. Delete the sub-key named "UserChoice" 4. Close Regedit.exe Method 2: ====== 1. Click Start, Type "command" in the search box. Then right click on "Command Prompt" as is now shown above in the menu and select "Run as Administrator". 2. In the command window type the following command. assoc .zip=CompressedFolder That will restore .zip files to their original Windows Explorer associations. If the issues persist after trying the above steps, please help to collect some information for further research. Thank you for your cooperation. System Information ================ The System Information can provide us with more information about the current status of the system. I would like to check it for you. Please send it to me using the following steps: 1. Click the "Start" menu, type "MSINFO32" in the Search Bar and press Enter to start System Information. 2. On the popup window, on the menu bar, click "File", and click "Save", type a file name and then choose NFO as "Save as type", click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click Save. 3. Please right-click on the exported file, choose "Send To" -> "Compressed (zipped) Folder", and then send the zip file to v-30siwu@mssupport.microsoft.com for my further research. Note: Please be assured that the file is compressed before sending it to me, because I cannot open some files which is not compressed. Note: When attaching files to emails, the process will vary depending on the email application being used. While you are composing the email, most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it once and then clicking on the "Attach" button. So hoping every extra bit of communication helps, lloyd |

Or, of course, you could download one of the bazillion free archive tools on the web...
Like 7-zip or something... ![]() Steve Quote:

I haven't personally used vista, but someone I know with vista has had good results unzipping after downloading 7-zip.
I can't say 100% for sure what kind of zipped files they were, but whatever it was it worked for them. Sorry I'm kind of foggy about it as I don't use vista. Edit: Whoops look like I was beat to it. But still a good tip. Generally speaking there are a "bazillion" free tools to do the same things you are already doing with your windows box for free. |

I have had the same problem with some zipped files. The way I get around it is to double click the zipped file. I new window will open showing the contents. I select all files then right click and copy. I then create a new folder and paste the contents in it. I have done this numerous times without any problems.
