20 Day Old Website, 70 Signed up users..but....

INTERNET MARKETING

I have this website and there is something weird going on. Everyday I'm getting people signing up but 80% of them has their name like admin03005h , admin03106y etc. and everyday I check the site stats and I'm not getting any hits even when I get 10s of sign ups. Jetpack site stats only has 18 all time views and Google Analytics has 0 visits. anyone had this issue before? I tried to search but got no luck. Thanks as always.

Sounds like the profile spambots have found your site. They sign up as users to drop "profile links" they think will help their SEO. Delete them.

The other possibility is a different bot looking for blogs to exploit. Same answer, though. Delete them.

Hey Alfred,

Just like John mentioned, the spam bots found you. Are you using a specific script like Vbulletin, wordpress, etc. for your website? If yes, you might want to do a search on google for spam solutions, hacks, plugins, mods, modifications for the platform you are using to run your website - there are solutions available to help stop the spam or at least slow it down.

I totally agree with JohnMcCabe and GuyJoe.

A while back I had the same problem.

I spent a huge amount of time deleting each one.

I finally decided to not allow anyone to register to my site.

Here is something that may help.

WordPress › Ban Hammer « WordPress Plugins

IMO I do not think it is worth it to allow people to register.

I prefer to just develop an email list by using an autoresponder.

Maybe they are mistaking your optin box as a login and are trying to brute force into your site.

  I had the same thing happen with many people signing up as users to my website, it turned out to be a bot. I realized this when I found the emails had about 100 different variations of burberry bags as there email address and I started getting all these weird comments that were ads for burberry bags.
  I ended up just not allowing anyone to register as a user of my site anymore. I added an opt-in popup instead.

For wordpress there are spam protection plugins and captchas that can help stop the bots. For other platforms like vBulletin, Expression engine, phpBB etc also there are scripts that can prevent bots from subscribing.
