Squidoo or website with domain name

I have heard alot of information on how search engines really like Squidoo and other web 2.0 sites. I have looked into Squidoo but don't really get the lens thingy. Would it be worth my while to set up a Squidoo page instead of websites and blogs? Could someone explain what the lens things are...Please
Thanks
Denise

In my opinion you should always have your own domains and sites, and then use Squidoo, article marketing and the other web2.0 sites to link back to your own sites.

agreed but if you are just starting out using a squidoo page is a good idea because it is free and it ranks eaisily.

the ideal thing is to combine it altogether.. If you are on a budget, then go for squidoo, hubpages, etc. But, I would always try to get a domain name for your money page if possible. And, you can always have squidoo and the other web2.0 sites feeding to your domain.

Thanks for the helpful info.. What I am getting from this is that domain websites are best and use web 2.0 pages such as Squidoo can be used as a secondary source.

Thanks rondo for info...Will redo signature when I have completed my review blog.

A well built squidoo lens can draw in tons of organic traffic from search engines. You will find many squidoo lens on the first page of google. But it really does take a well built lens!
I make well built lenses by the way!

If you're selling your own downloadable product you will need your own domain anyway to upload your product to. If you're affiliate marketing Squidoo can work nicely.

Another thing about places like Squidoo that people sometimes forget is this. When you enter a search term into Google, say the name of a product, only two listings from any outside domain will show.

For example, if you are keying in on "dog training" (and that is way to broad) and enter that phrase into Google, there will be a maximum of only two Squidoo lenses that show anywhere in the listings. (Same for Blogger, HubPages, etc.)

So before you go spending a lot of time setting up your first lens, I would do a quick Google search for the keyword you will be targeting and see if any Squidoo lenses are showing up on the first couple pages. If there are, let's say, already two Squids on page one for that term, you are going to have to out-do one of them to get in the listings anywhere no matter how good and well optimized your lens is. This is why a lot of affiliates will host a WordPress blog on their own domain so they don't run into this problem.

Another reason is not just the two page rule but should a lens be in a very popular category and say gets locked then you are out of traffic until a review and out all together if it gets deleted.

That's a really good point that only 2 Squidoo lenses will show up for a particular keyword, so best perhaps to target longer tail keywords.

As an example of the usefulness of these additional things like Squidoo and Hubpages, I've recently been working on a rather obscure topic. My website on the topic has a main page and an indented page in G's top 10, and a little further down I have a Squidoo lens on the topic, an old page on another website of mine, and an RSS feed I did recently.

I've used both squidoo and my blog. I'm finding it easier to get my blog ranked quicker in google. Do you need help setting up a blog?

I use squidoos and blgooer stites to link back to my product pages. Then I use social bookmarking to build up the sqids and blogs. I have a LOT of competition for my key words so the squids and blogs rarely get read, but they are helping build good backlinks. It is a lot of work, but it is helping.
