Am I Supposed to Get So Much Spam Comments?

After starting my WP site, I get 10+ spam comments every day, linking to a URL that doesn't exist. The comments usually look like: "ajkdsjfkauhsdj" and that's it.

Am I supposed to be getting this much spam? Is this normal for most sites?

Just try to use askimet plugin, however it is a paid plugin but it will worth for stopping spam comment. You Can also use Disqus comment system.

    1. Yes, you'll get lots of spam comments
    2. Get Akismet, which will filter out 95% of the spam. Check occasionally to ensure that real comments don't get mixed in with the spam though

I second this... Installing Akismet would make your life 100 times easier when it comes to deleting spam comments.... It filters out almost all of the comments that have a spammy look so problem solved...

      Regards

        Only 10 a day?:p

I've pretty much stopped spam comments dead by using a combination of Akismet and Bad Behavior plugins.

The combo seems to knock spammers dead like Raid on a roach...

Yes, spambots are normal fare. You should activate your akismet anti spam plugin to weed out all known spambots.

I don't get 10 per day on any of my blogs, more like 1-2, but you may have more traffic than me. But yes, lots of spam comments are normal... apparently people haven't realized that those don't work for SEO anymore.

As a side note, it also matters where you're advertising your URL, if you're using directory submissions for example, that could be one of the reasons you're getting spam comments every day, something to think about.

I had your same issue... I went like a month without approving/deleting spam posts and i had over 300 so I installed Akismet. Haven't had an issue since.

Use Akismet - once every few days do a quick scan to see if any legitimate comments have slipped through the net. Most of it will be garbage.

I used to get 40-80 spam comments a DAY.
Now I'm running solvemedia captchas and am down to only 10 a WEEK.

Plus, now whenever someone manually tries to plant a back link via comment, they have to sit through a small ad and make me money.

Yes, its typical. As others have stated, use a better captcha system.

I used Askimet and still had tons of spam. Not a SINGLE spam comment for a couple of months now, since I installed aforementioned plug-in. It works great!

Askimet is free and works great. Of course, you can alternatively turn off commenting altogether.

Spam is annoying and so ridiculous especially when it is written in another language. I ended up turning the comments off of one website

Generally the more traffic you get, the more spam you also get. Like others have advised, Akismet blocks most of the spam, although some legitimate comments also slip into the spam folder sometimes so I make sure I check them before deleting.
