IP addresses in Marketing

Hey guys,

I've been reading a lot about people needing IP addresses, but I can never figure out why. Why do webmasters need IP addresses? Especially dedicated ones?

I've done some research on the net but most of the sites seem to cater to people with a degree in rocket science or engineering.

They mean nothing and its a myth that worked over a decade ago. IP addresses are the least of concerns... The majority of it is hear-say monkey see monkey do..

People need IP addressees to hide their identity. Black hat stuff.

Any presence on the internet has an IP address, if web site is on a shared server, which is inherently less secure or reliable, the IP address is shared with other sites on the same server, if some of them employ blckhat practices, that IP address might appear on black lists, which can effect your site as well.

Big marketing players using dedicated servers inherently also have a unique IP address.

In the old days, creating backlinks fro SEO purposes from other properties you owned, required that they have significantly different IP addresses to avoid their being detected by search engines as having the same owner.

Certain shady activities requiring multiple aliases may require signing up for an account using different IP addresses, those who do heavy advertising on Craigslist use proxy servers with multiple IP addresses for different cities to allow them to make more posts with being banned.

Wow, so it seems like there really isn't any real reason to use them today.

    Thanks for the reply.
