Programmer Turned Marketeer

Hi,
This is just an introduction and sharing my experiment. Programming is my main craft and I always been focused on playing with new technologies and thinking how I can turn those into a profitable business.

But now after 10 years of playing around, I am realizing that programming is my hobby. I do it for fun. But I can never dedicate enough time to finish a product for end user market or even other programmers. Sometimes I would stop working on a project because I have solved the whole problem in my head.

Anyways, recently, I started listening to different podcasts and I am changing my game plan. I bought a pre-built dating web script. It is not the best programming but it gets the job done. I am customizing it a bit, then start market it to a small niche market.

I have $100 a month budget. So far I have looked at Facebook and Google ads. Soon I will check Plenty of Fish ads.

I don't expect to get rich from this site. This is more like a year long training course in online marketing. If it brings any decent returns then I will put in effort to improve code and increase marketing budget.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

Amer

If you're a programmer, then build things that are USEFUL. And maybe team up with someone who then knows how to MARKET your new thing.

  • Why wouldn't you want to get rich? Unless your already rich of course. Off of the top of my head I don't know anything about dating site scripts so I can't offer you any specific advice, but if you do a quick search for dating site scripts you should be able to see if there is a market for your product.

Anyways if you do need any marketing specific advice your are definitely at the right place.

I was in a similar situation as you, but like like brettb said I teamed up with someone who has been studying the market. My partner has a wealth of info and contacts and has been in the game for a while. We use his knowledge and my programming skills to build a product people will want to use. Maybe try a bit of networking? Perhaps you can find someone looking to partner up and/or teach you.

If you are going to be doing paid ads then you might want to start promoting a CPA dating offer first for a well known dating site. That way you can tweak your ads and get them working with a site you know converts well. Once you have your paid ads down you can then start sending them to your own site and testing things.

You might want to package up your programming skills and market them as tutorials, software products, videos, ebooks etc. I am a programmer myself and have made a lot of money over the years using that model.

Oh I am not giving up programming. My initial post was written poorly. I work at very good company as a software engineer. No problem with my day job.

After work I usually code again either on a fun project or some side business idea. The problem been that I can never finish any side business ideas. At one point, my friend and I partnered up but it didn't workout. I feel like wasted a lot of time programming boring stuff like user registration etc.

So dating site is way for me to gamble with money instead of time. Learn as much as I can about marketing side of stuff. I really hate putting another 2000's style website but website is not the main focus.

WillR, thanks for the tip. I will have to check it out.

Troy23, you bring up a great idea. I already blog about programming but it is very disorganized. Perhaps organize it better and start creating tutorials. My first job was tutoring and it was actually very fun. Ever since I have been helping friends with programming and math. Probably should start writing useful tutorials on my blog.

    thanks everyone!
