Interesting Marketing Trick I Noticed Verizon Doing

Just something I noticed -- unfortunately I didn't think to take a screenshot.

Verizon Wireless was promoting a tweet by the NFL --> which contained a video of a game winning touch-down or something.

What I noticed is that Verizon wireless was the one who purchased the "sponsored advertisement" from twitter, but I couldn't figure out why.

It turned out that verizon had a ad spot on the video --> sorta like on youtube, but basically their advertisement played before the NFL video.

I just thought it was funny that verizon obviously purchased both the original video ad, and then paid more money to promote a different company's tweet just to get more exposure to their ad.

Verizon definitely makes their name known on everything NFL. That strategy is pretty interesting though (and funny).

Ah ok -- I haven't been keeping up with football this year -- didn't realize that.

But yeah -- it just seemed funny to me.

I guess their idea is that the ad will work better if its attached to interesting content? instead of just sending the traffic to an ad of their own without other content?

Probably not. They really don't want the content to be interesting because they want people to pay attention to the ads. the perfect content is over-hyped and a bit duller than promised so the ads get more attention.

In this scenario, they are paying for more opportunities to be seen in more places. Kind of like popups or paid to surfs.

People assume you have to promote only your own products directly and Verizon is making a good example of how you don't! You can be about anything you want to online and simply piggyback how you make your money off of that. Thanks for sharing this example of Verizon doing just that!
