If We Die Will Adsense, Clickbank, etc. Continue to Send Us Cheques?

Since most of us here are building passive income for ourselves and perhaps our families' future. I had a thought last night that what if I suddenly die, who would control my small online business? Have you told anyone about the passwords of your emails and websites? I personally haven't and I have not trained any one in the family about the nature of our business in IM.

So it occured to me just in case I die without ever telling anyone my account passwords in emails, websites, networks, etc.. Will the checks from Adsense, Clickbank, CPA networks, etc keep coming in under my name even if I'm already dead? Will they be valid money for my family?

Those checks will keep on coming but if you are not there then who would pay for your hosting company? if they don't get payment, they will shutdown your account. Who would renew your domain name every year?

Well legally i guess you would need to give someone those pass words so they can change the name on th clickbank cheques etc, it is very hard to get money out of an estate so rather give those you love that access and if they are not trustworthy enough now while you are alive i think the leave it in your will or have password manager login saved somewhere special.... But again GREAT QUESTION

I have an envelope with detailed information about my online businesses and which opportunities my family has when I am not around anymore (basically I am suggest to sell the sites). Also included a list of e-mail addresses of friends from around the world so that they can be informed that I reached a higher MLM-Level ;-)

    kind regards from Vienna

My wife makes the same complaint all the time whenever she
sees me enter a password for my site. She claims that if I
die she would be clueless about what to do with my business.

Only thing she is not clueless about is marrying again after
I'm gone ... so good, let her remain clueless.

Nice one Ray... Me? I have a big insurance policy. If I die, I don't think they'll care about my online activities.

Actually, I have already worked those questions out with out even knowing it.

Hosting-automatically renews to a CC that is automatically paid.

Domains-The ones that I care about automatically renew.

Clickbank--sends the checks to a company name not a personal name--My wife has access to the company account.

    Adsense-same thing.

Passwords to sites--I use roboform thay are all stored in a database--I run a monthly manual backup.

I guess it depends if you *want* them to keep sending you cheques?

I have no dependants (by choice!), so when I go, it all goes. And some lucky domain sniper will pick up my domains.

Should that change in the future, and I make a will, perhaps I'll restructure things so my companies can be picked up and continued / sold etc.

this thread just caught my attention. i do not deny that i did not have this thought before. I think they'll just keep sending in cheques. but as mentioned above, just make sure those cheques are sent to your company's name which one of your loved ones have access to.

I think I should have every detail about my hosting, etc written on notepad and then seal it up in a thumbdrive and have it written in my will to have that thumbdrive given to my family members if anything happens to me. :/

Very good points brought here. I think the best option is to do business in a business name rather than personal.

About the will, how do you actually do that? I have no idea how one makes a will. Do I need a lawyer for that or do I just write it up and seal in an envelop and tell my family to open it when I die?

There are many reasons to do business under a business entity and not as an individual...

But you need to make sure it is the right type of entity for the purposes you need.

Corporations can live long after you are gone. They also can shield you from unlimited personal liability.

I have a safe deposit box in both mine and my wife's names. She has a key and knows that if I die, she needs to open it. Inside the box, I've left an envelope with "If I'm dead" written on it that contains detailed instructions of what to do with my business if I'm no longer around.

The box also contains my will, life insurance policy info, account numbers and locations of bank and brokerage accounts, etc. It may seem a bit morbid, but I sleep better knowing that if I don't wake up my family's financial future is still secure.

Of course, any time you make yourself more valuable dead than alive, you're taking a risk.

      Very true!

Another point to think about -- wills go into probate and often take a while to be taken care of. You don't want your business to be stuck and possibly die while you're waiting for things to get moving.

If you're being paid via direct deposit, the companies paying you will continue to pay you because they'll have no idea you're dead.

As long as your sites are still up, the hosting is still paid for, and you're still generating traffic, you'll keep getting paid.

A lot of people have bank accounts set up as "POD" (pay on death) and list someone else's name on there. This person would have automatic access to your accounts when you die WITHOUT the will and WITHOUT going through probate, if I understand correctly.

It's just like setting up the titles to your vehicles as "TOD" (title on death) so they will pass directly to someone else WITHOUT the will and WITHOUT going through probate.

I've actually thought about this quite a bit! My plan is to form an LLC with hubby. That way there will be no legal issues about collecting money(I think?) when I go and he can keep collecting the checks.

Someday I will record some videos with Jing to show him the basics of keeping the biz running. I don't think he's interested in doing anything with it, but why let that passive income go to waste? He can keep the domains renewed and hosting paid for and collect money for years to come.

At this time, I don't really want to give him any incentive to do away with me which is why I have not taken action on any of these plans yet

Every website I use is on a 16GB USB stick, with RoboForm2Go loaded on it. All anyone has to do is take my stick, plug it in any machine. RoboForm2Go automatically loads from the USB drive, then they enter the master password to access the IDs/Passwords to all my sites. If my master password is in a will, then they have the key to the "kingdom" as it is. It's backed up, and the list of IDs/passwords can be printed off.

If credit cards keep getting renewed then hosting, AR, other services will keep billing.

The bigger question is - who's got a family member that wants to, or has been trained to run their IM business. That's the $1M question.

While many of us are trying to set up our business on autopilot, that can't be 100% of the issue. Who sends the broadcast to your list to explain the change in ownership? Who explains to JVs the change, etc. Who takes over support? Who responds to emails?

Some sort of flowchart, or document explaining how all the pieces of your business fit together would be key to having someone "run the business".

I've thought many times about the memberships I belong to, the software I own, etc. that I know are run by one person. Does he/she have a backup person trained? I'm not comfortable having critical elements of my business reliant on one person staying healthy, not taking vacations, not selling his/her business, not getting out of IM and walking away midstream.

This topic is too scary. I think I'll read another thread, quickly.

I've thought a lot about this as well, and found services like DeathSwitch that send you emails at a set interval, and when you don't respond it assumes you're dead and emails your passwords and other info to someone else. I'm hesitant to try this for many reasons, but it is one possible solution.

A will is probably the best way, or just have someone (spouse, parents, etc) who has access to your information and instructions upon your death. I think it's the best way to do it, and if they can run your business after your passing that's even better.

Without a will, you are leaving your heirs a headache. With a will, your finances will be tied up for sometime in probate. Your executor will have the authority to pay bills such as the mortgage and even your Hostgator. But you can't just have your funds moving all over the place by multiple people.

Best advise, speak with an attorney and CPA, especially if you are DBA.

As mentioned, it is best to have all business activities in a business name rather than your personal name. Problems can easily arise with collections from PayPal or continuation of AdSense accounts if not in a business name. I've structured an LLC so that it's easy to bring on new members or to transfer membership upon a member's death.

I'd caution about putting too much business detail in a will. I believe wills become public documents when probated and I'm sure there is some stuff you'd want to keep private.

Several have mentioned having folders and instructions for their business activities. I've been accumulating that sort of stuff, along with passwords, contacts, strategies/plans, etc in documents and putting them on a thumb drive. In this form it is simple to make updates/changes as things change.

It's helpful to read what others have done to prepare for such circumstances, too. Regardless of how much planning is done, something will be left out or forgotten. Sharing what you've done, or plan to do, helps all of us.

This stuff is all part of treating a business as a business and also taking care of your family.

      Peace

This is a great topic and something many people fail to consider when successful in Internet marketing.

I've personally got everything loaded into a special file "Read Me" file on my computer and on a backup drive with Roboform attached to store all my passwords. In it there's specific instructions on steps to be taken and things that need to be done.
