Open vs Closed LinkedIn groups?

I´m building a LinkedIn group in order to create leads and traffic to my service. What is your experience with open vs closed groups? What works best?

The pros and cons? An open group grows faster. You'll get more discussions, more members and more opportunity for lead generation. Discussions and groups are indexed by search engines. While that won't help your own site's rankings, it will associate your brand with the keywords, phrases and conversations that are meaningful to your company. Open groups also mean more moderation of discussions, whereas closed groups tend to be smaller and naturally more focused.

Any thoughts?

An open group most of the time is the right answer if you want growth and leads. If you are making an exclusive group and a community that you do not want to grow, then go for a closed group. My experience is a good open group can grow with little effort while a good closed group can be a place where people make a community and share advice/information. With so many communities available to do this, I do not see the need or participate with many closed groups myself. It seems most groups are shifting to open to get the largest growth. If you want a closed group, Facebook seems to work better since you can invite your friends easily.

Unless you are sharing private information for some reason with a select group of insiders, open groups seem more useful in general.

Naming your group in a searchable way that associates you with the group helps too.

If you keep the doors open, you can get good marketers joining to your group which is a positive thing for you and your page credibility, which means more exposure and more opportunities for your business to grow wildly.
