How do you introduce your site's essense to you first time/random traffic?

Hi all,
what are the ways you perform ( or seen cool methods on other sites) an introduction of your site to your first time/random visitors that come from search engines. social and etc. They reach some internal page, and usually leave without realizing what the site as a whole is about.

I used to use "what would seth godin do" plugin, but it's kinda old fashioned now. Placing a short "About us" section as a sidebar widget is another idea.

Any additional ideas or suggestions?

Appreciate the help.

Have related posts plugin in the widget area - if people see something interesting they might click on another article.

people like doing something diffierently. if you ask them to click your links, no one will do so. instead you may say "don't click here" and you may get lots of clicks.

Exclusive content, usually relevant to the reader. It really is that simple.

If this is the case, then you might as well try to get them to sign up to your email newsletter while they're on your site. Include an opt-in form on every page of your site. And if possible, direct all your traffic to a simple lead capture page. You don't need the other theatrics when it comes to "welcoming" them to your site.
