Which Advertising is better Paid or Free

I am a newbie trying to get into internet marketing online. I have ran into different forms of advertising my website. I would like to know, which is better free or paid advertising for a website to get traffic?

    For me the very best advertising has been my heavily search optimized blogs - the traffic just never stops - but it is at times very boring work to get it all set up.

    In my experience I prefer paid, simply because (IMO) it's more reliable. If you're paying for a banner ad placed on a high trafficked website you know you're going to get traffic from it (as long as your ad converts). However if you're paying someone for site seo you may get your site in the top of the search engines for a certain period of time, but eventually more often then not your site will slowly vanish into the serps.

    In saying all that there are obviously a huge range of both paid and free advertising methods and that's not always the case (take youtube vids for example - they generally gain more and more traffic overtime).
